Hi

A mate with a 600cc has offered to let me do the tests on his bike.

Sooo what exactly would i need??

Bike paperwork - tax disc/mot certificate?

Insurance certificate? - for insurance, if i did it for the day on either my own 125 insurance if possible or on the owners insurance, would that let me ride it supervised on L plates to and from the test centre or would i have to go as his passenger there and just use for the test?

Driving license - both parts - CBT cert and theory cert

Have i missed anything??

cheers

You will need your mate to pillion you to the test center.Only an instructor can ride with you on l's..

Check with your insurance to make sure they will cover you for the tests Thumbs Up

You need:

Tax disk, L plates, their bullshit list of "appropriate" clothing, and nothing obviously wrong with the bike.

That's it.

You're asked to confirm that it's insured, but not to show evidence. Can't hurt to have it, but there's nothing different to what you're doing than thousands of candidates who use riding school bikes.

You don't need to wear hi-vis, but I'd recommend that you do so anyway since they'll might not know that.

Jaffa cakes and petrol money for your mate.

The examiner seeing you're on a private bike and not with an instructor, wouldn't he ask to see evidence of insurance?

I know they never ask when you are with an instructor, but then they know most if not all of the instructors as they see them day in day out and they know/trust their bikes are properly insured. However, seeing a private bike of a private bloke they've never seen before, would they still only just have the signature on the test sheet without asking any further evidence?

It's not on the list of documents to bring, so what would be the grounds for requiring it on the day? Just don't give them any reason to doubt that there's insurance in place.

They're not coppers, and they're not responsible if it turns out that you're not insured, so really, what do they care?

And there is absolutely no reason why you can't be insured on a 600 or a Hayabusa with a provisional license. It's perfectly legal to ride one under the right conditions, which includes being on test.

i took my insurance certificate to my mod 1, just in case, the examiner told me they didnt check them, as 9 times out of 10 people dont bother to bring them... and as long as they get you to sign that your insured, they have no responsibility for you being uninsured (i think its driving offence INS50 [or simular], where they can be convicted of allowing you to ride without appropriate insurance... - thats what the disclaimer signature removes liability for)

Personally I think they've been badly advised, and even raising the issue creates a duty of care where no duty would have (reasonably) existed - like for their "appropriate clothing" list.

Still, their call. But as long as they don't ask people to bring evidence of insurance, they can't very well reject candidates for not having it.

That said, if you are insured on a mate's bike through whatever wheeze you've worked out, you'd be as well carrying the cert around anyway for the duration. It's the only thing that definitely proves to Plod that you are insured.
