Orange billed me 80 quid the other day so in a fit of rage I cancelled the direct debit, which they have only ever used to bill arbitrary amounts from me (£30 a month my arse). So I'm going to continue to use the phone until whatever happens, happens, when they don't get their next bill.

I barely used the phone at all. I sent 1 - ONE - text message to a girl in Austria that literally had four words in it: "I don't have skype". Other than that, I most certainly didn't go over my 300 minutes limit and sent less than a dozen text messages within the UK.

So fuck this whole contract racket. I'm going back to pay as you go on my old phone, but I hear it's got a lot more expensive recently. Does anyone else use PAYG or is it truly not worth it? I don't like signing my name on dotted lines...

Did you consider reading your bill?

One text message does not cost that much and the rest will be itemised. You've made a mistake or they have, but it's easier to sort it than have your credit rating screwed for the next 5 years.

I've never had a contract in my life :/
Pay as you gogogogogogo all the way Razz
If you're not using a phone often (which it sounds like) I wouldn't bother.

I've considered that also. Am i right in saying the only support you get is from the forums rather than a customer services call? not that it would bother me.

Also heard they piggy back on 02 so signal issues shouldn't be a problem (at last in the locations i visit anyway).

It's owned by o2, so same networks, yes. They also have customers running the message boards and things, yes. I've heard good things about them.

Another +1 for giffgaff
See this linky for their deals : https://giffgaff.com/index/offer

International calls and texts aren't included in the bundles though, neither are 0845, 0870 etc. but 0800 and 0500 are free.

and seeing as no-one else has spammed their referral link...

Unless it's account related help then they do have an online helpdesk where you submit a webform and (usually) get a reply within 24hrs.

I have a contract with Vodafone purely because their foreign services and deals are by far and away the best. If it wasn't for that I'd be PAYG.

Much as that was an interesting read and all, have you contacted Nokia and asked them why? Ive been with them nearly 15 years and never have they charged me extra for no reason.

My contract has expired, for some reason my phone kept on working and I kept on being billed as before so I continued but now I'm pissed off so I cancelled the direct debit. Ball is in their court now.

Also I've tried to access my bill before. Totally unable to. Customer support will not speak to me (ignoring my calls and emails). They billed me over £100 once and I went mad, emailing and calling and being ignored all the time. I demanded access to an itemised bill and that was the only time I got a response - an automated one telling me how to log into my account, which I'd done, but there was nothing I could do from there! No link to a bill, absolutely nothing.

I want to be in control of my finances, not having some company arbitrarily taking money from me. Hence, PAYG.

Edit: giffgaff looks pretty promising actually, is it owned by a larger mobile company or is it its own?

It's owned by Telefonica and funded by O2.

If you aren't going to pay them, you're best off not using them. When they do pull the plug you'll lose access to the number you have, you probably won't be able to port it to another provider, you'll wreck your credit rating and and you'll STILL owe them the money.

Doing nothing is the worst thing if you care even a bit about your credit rating for the next 6 years.

My mum keeps insisting PAYG isn't what it used to be and that £10 is nothing any more. Any truth to this? I'm not exactly a frequent phoner Wink

It's easy, but you'll have to learn how to use a computer and actually read that bill they've left in your account. It sounds like fraudulent use, or a mistake, or another phone on your contract or something.

Other possibility - do you receive a lot of dodgy texts?

That's what your bill is then! You've signed up to/been signed up to a dodgy service. Each one will be costing you £1.50ish. The operators hate these things as they hardly make any money from them but have to put up with loads of angry customers. Orange can't do a thing and if you port your number they'll continue.

They *should* have cancellation instructions along with the text. If not try to identify it online as someone will have had a similar issue with a similar company.

I use GiffGaff.
I used to spend £5 a month for 60 minutes, 300 texts.
Now I have an Internet enabled phone I spend £10 for 300 minutes, and unlimited messaging/internet.

You simply buy a monthly package once per month out of your airtime balance.

The only real downside is that it's on O2. Reception can be bad in some remote areas.

Well that probably answers it then. No idea how or why I have been getting these texts.

If I can get a £5/month deal then I'll very satisfied!

lol my mobile phone is an old sony ericsson K800i with an 02 sim card.

it gets charged up once a month, spends its life turned off in my bike jacket with £5 credit on it just in case i happen to break down or need to call emergency services.

hate having a mobile phone.

You can have he £5 package and use the credit for internet. Depends how much internet you use. I only really use it rarely!
