From what i can gather in past threads on here there are a few people who suffer with anxiety and panic attacks. Me being one of them.

Here is something that i found quite enlightening. Its a long (very long!) read, but worth it.

Very good read so far Nick, thanks, might be of use to my girlfriend actually. My only panic attack was following a tachycardia - possibly a different circumstance to most sufferers - but it was horrible. Those putting up with that, and anxiety in general, on a regular basis have my sympathies.

At work I see a lot of people with depression, anxiety and whole load of related conditions - the most tragic one so far was a claustrophobic chap this week who was self medicating with six litres of cider a day.

PS - PM incoming Wink

I had one once, it was very frightening. I actually had a fear of impending doom Laughing There is no better way to explain it I felt like I was in a huge amount of trouble and that nothing was OK. I couldn't really move or breathe Shocked

Yeah I get this occasionally, escpecially outside supermarkets or things. Either I can't go in, or I'm in there, mind goes blank, can't buy anything, I have to leave.

No lunch for me then!

Thats like telling someone who is depressed to 'snap out of it'.

Or someone with a broken arm to 'stop being a pussy and use it'.

Again, its like depression - in that if YOU personally have not experienced it then you have NO idea what its like, let alone if someone is being weak or not.

In a way anxiety sufferers are very brave. They face their (irrational) fears all the time. I know i do, and i do it regardless.

No it's not. Did you actually read the article?

The waffling article wrote:
But if we cut-to-the-chase, and let the truth out early, then the answer to that particular question in very easy indeed:

You don’t have an illness, there is nothing wrong with you.

My summary is accurate, just with the "you're a unique snowflake" verbiage stripped out.

Unfortunately Borg it's a more complicated situation than you think it is.

'Snap out of it' is as helpful as 'Just go faster' is to a racer.

My wife has just started seeing a new counsellor for anxiety and depression, who is putting her through ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy), as opposed to the more usual CBT (Cock and Ball Torture, wait, wrong one, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy).

To me it seems very much like 'Man up and get on with your life', in that you accept the negative thoughts, realise they're not useful and get on with your day (from my understanding of what she told me anyway). I'm hoping it will work out for her, and she seems positive about it which is always a good start, I think CBT just bamboozled the fuck out of her and made her even more anxious.

Either way, I think everyone needs to find the thing that works for them, some people respond to a 'man up', others will be driven further down the dark spiral by it. Whichever way works for people, embrace it and realise that it really does help them.

Of course i read it Roger.

The difference is the article goes into detail and explains why these things happen and what is going on.
Then it tells you that you are fine and nothing is going to happen.

That helped me tremendously, because, as stupid as it sounds, for years i had no idea why every now and again i would have these 'attacks'.

If you had come along and told me what was going on inside my head to cause this i.e the limbic system was messed up, then that would have helped too.

Its like most things, knowledge dispels fear.

I haven't read it yet, but basically the panic often comes from thinking there's something wrong with you. I had a lot of anxiety about lightheadedness, went through lots of blood pressure monitoring, blood tests etc, never got to the bottom of it with doctors but eventually worked out there were no solid links to anything physical and eventually 'thought' myself well. I still get the odd dizzy spell but just try my best to ignore it and it goes away on it's own.

I had these dizzy spells for around 6 months, if someone had explained anxiety and panic attacks to me at the start and told me "You don’t have an illness, there is nothing wrong with you" I'd probably have sorted it all out a lot quicker! Very Happy

I'm summarising the article, not giving an editorial.

And it remains an accurate summary.

There's no need to Teflon-up every issue.

Alpha-9, you're a moron anyway.

Rogerborg, I expect better of you.

If you were in a relationship with someone who suffers from an anxiety disorder and occasional panic attacks, you'd understand. Until then, butt out.

I'm still only half way down the page, it's actually very good though! I'm going to try to get my missus to read it as she's still struggling with agoraphobia after a panic attack whilst out walking.

It really is good. Lots of repetition, but it all makes sense in the end.
For me it was similar to when i read Allen Carrs 'easy way to quit smoking' - something clicked in my head and my thought process was instantly changed.

Powerful stuff.

Well I seriously hope those that are saying "man up", and "stop being a pussy", and "people with anxiety issues are weak".. don't ever get a disorder. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy!!

I've been a sufferer for a long time and even with this condition I have put myself out there and done stuff that make my mates wonder at where I get my confidence from. Has nothing to do with character or being weak.

My life went to absolute dog shit at one point, and all because my body was in constant fight/flight mode and seeing everything as a threat. I always got people saying "what are you anxious about?"... the thing is you have no fucking clue what your anxious or panicking about, that's the point!! it's a disorder, it doesn't make any sense, the fact that you body/mind is malfunctioning is scary as fuck and you don't know how to sort it... that's why as sufferers its good to read personal accounts of people that have come out the other side.

Those that have never experienced this disorder, imagine feeling all these symptoms "constantly" on a daily basis and still getting out of bed and getting on with life.

Shortness of breath or hyperventilation
Heart palpitations
A racing heart
Chest pain or discomfort
Trembling or shaking
Choking feeling
Feeling unreal or detached from your surroundings
Sweating
Nausea or upset stomach
Feeling dizzy, light-headed, or faint
Numbness or tingling sensations
Hot or cold flashes
Pins and needles in face
Difficulty Swallowing
Fear of dying, losing control, or going crazy
Panic
Difficulty concentrating

(It's the same feeling people get when they have to do public speaking in front of loads of people when its at it's worst then times that by 2... and it doesn't stop)

People who cope with anxiety and live it are fucking heroes!!!

(and yes I am Super Bubbs!)

If you knew what it was like or had any experience of it you would agree with me.

I wish it was as easy as just saying "I embrace death".

I haven't read the full article yet but read half of it and it makes a lot of sense. I use CBT and Mindfulness techniques to get over my problems but they are still there under the surface.

Bubbs, i know exactly where you are coming from mate.

One symptom that was particularly nasty for me was derealisation. I had that constantly for a few weeks. Thought i was going insane.

I cured that by taking some Diazapam. The relief i felt when it kicked in and i felt 'normal' again was beyond words. Its just a shame its so moreish! Laughing

I dont really talk about my 'condition' (for want of a better word) very often, but when i do i am always surprised that there are so many of us in the same boat.

De-realisation is horrible.. especially when combined with depression too, you feel like your not part of this planet and at the same time you cant talk to anyone else either because everything feels alien. I remember at it's worst I felt totally segregated from humanity and totally and utterly alone. Dark times!!

I agree you do think your going insane, it definitely feels like your sanity is holding by a single thread.. my doctor used to remind me that people who are insane or going insane don't know they are.. to them everything is still normal. That snapped me out of that mindframe pretty quick usually.
