XR 125 too big for short person?

I want to get a bike for greenlaning and riding to work through the winter. I thought the xr 125 would be a good choice since it has an electric start for when I get stuck in the mud

I've read that it's important to be able to flat foot in winter weather, but at 5 foot 5 and with a 30 inch inseam I'm a bit concerned that an xr 125 would be too big for me. Currently on a SR 125 and that is tiny.

Do you think it would fit me or could someone recommend any alternatives?

My mod 2 is at the start of October so I'm all ears for slightly more powerful bikes that can be lowered too. Cheers!

I think you'll be fine. My brother in law has one and he's only a couple of inches better off than you, and he seems to be ok. I am 5ft 10 ish and look positively ape like on it

Ah cool, I will go to view one then and try it out. It's listed at 32.5 " seat height - does the suspension lower quite a bit when it's sat on?

It's just that a quick google search shows a lot of tall people recommend it as a 125.

You should be fine. Im around 5'7 or 5'8 and im Buying one (getting dropped off tomrow). I went to check it out and i feel its a good height for me and dont feel in the slightest that im pushing it. It does sink down with suspension and im only around 8-9 stone.

If you want a good green lane bike the XR 125 is not what you want, it is a commuter bike with cheap suspension which is not that good offroad. It also has quite weak wheels that bend really easily as it is built to LOOK like a offroad bike, i only took my xr around a field a few times and although it was fun it did not perform well.

The engine was pretty gutless too although mine did have 20k miles on the clock.

On flat it would do 60mph at a push with not much wind.

Thanks for all the advice. I went to view an XR 125 and *almost* bought it. It just about fit me, and I took it for a spin up and down the street, the suspension had quite a bit of give in it - I like! But then I can only compare it with my sr 125 Decided to wait till I pass my full test before buying something.

It was a lot taller than I though it would be, I went on a full day through the Thai jungle on some dirt bike but it was a little shorter. My memory must be playing up since I thought it was a honda.

I know it sounds daft to get a 125 cc after passing my test, but I'm looking for something that will be:

* good for commuting since I don't have a car

* able to be (kind of) comfortable on a roads or motorways for getting to green lanes f(50 to 60 mph)

* handle newbie level green lanes and trails

* be robust when I drop / crash it off road - it sounds like the xr 125 might not be so great for this

* able to flat foot it on the streets in winter in London - just because this is my first year of serious riding

Do you think it would be ok for this for 3 or 4 months then i could look at getting something more meaty, or are there any other bike that match the above?

After a bit of research, think I am going to go for a Yamaha TTR 250 electric start. Might be hard to find a street legal one though.

Look for a leccy start Yamaha XT225 Serow. Tough bikes, low seat height, lots of handles for picking them up when you drop them, nice engine.
