Ok guys, heres a funny one that I haven't come across before.

My GSXR Just failed its MOT on a few things, some of which I agree with, some of which I don't.

Perhaps some of you can advise me on what to do next/tell me if you've experienced similar things from testers.

Firstly, and the one that pissed me off big time, is:

"Rear Exhaust noise is clearly in excess of that emitted by a similar motor bicycle fitted with a standard silencer in average condition [7.1.2]"

Now, I've never had a problem before, my exhaust (whilst in no means quiet) is not excessively loud and isn't much lounder then a lot of bikes I've heard. It is baffled and isn't shortened.

The other thing I disagree with is:

"Rear reflector on motorcycle missing"

Now on the GSXR the tail light doubles as a reflector which I believe (correct me if I'm wrong) is perfectly fine. I've certainly never had a problem before.

I rather unfortunately had to change garage as the one that I usually go too closed about 8 months ago. I think I might have chosen the wrong one!

Anyway, I'm happy to sort out the other problems (fork seal and rear brake disk) but I'm not happy about the ones list above. Anybody have any advice on how to deal with the tester? Alternatively, anybody know of a slightly more friendly tester in/around leighton buzzard/dunstable/bletchley/milton keynes etc. ? Feel free to PM me.

Anything other than standard is considered "excessive"

A rear reflector costs £1 you tight arse. Does it have a reflector properly integrated or are you trusting "red plastic" as reflective?

I've had worse fails Laughing

I went to a local tester to ask if my Sportster with loud loud Screaming Eagle exhaust (with not for road use on it!) would pass. He said stick some metal tape over the printing and it will be fine. It passed with an advisory 'loud exhaust'. My advice when choosing an M.O.T. tester - ask first if exhaust will pass - if they say'no' - go somewhere that says 'yes' - simple!!

Well, I shone a light on the rear light and it reflected, and in any case it passed last time without one.

The exhaust is E marked. The tester kept going on about packing etc. but I think he was just being a dick. He said it had to sound the same as the stock system at which point I asked him if he'd ever heard one and he just skated over it. I'll sort the major bits (fork seal and brake disk) and take it for the free retest. If they fail it again (Who cares, its free) then I'll take it to the garage that I've been recommended in PM.

Thanks guys!

Hi

Reflectors built into tail lights are around but are pretty rare.

As to the exhaust, the official position is that it must be as quiet as a standard system in reasonable condition in the opinion of the MOT tester (and technically it is an offence to modify the exhaust system so it is louder than standard, even if still quieter than the legal limit).

All the best

Keith

Same garage on the free retest, different tester. He said it would fail with the exhaust as it was so I made this yesterday and stuck it down the exhaust pipe:

Complete bodge job but it worked and got it through Thumbs Up

Got a few advisories to sort out and gotta sort out the whole not running when hot problem but as far as the legalities go its back on the road!

Thanks for all the help guys Smile

My MOT tester said mine was overly loud, slap the baffles in and i'll pass it.

Also said "you've got no reflector.... I'll lob one on for you, might as well take it off when you get out"

So i did Smile not a single advisory

Main Honda dealer too
