Not really intended as a serious kill all the oldies thread btw... Laughing

Pre literature, and definatley pre-internet, old people were a repository of information. Going back to caveman days, if you survived to old age, chances are you had a good idea of what berries to eat, which ones to avoid, what leaves to chew when you had a headache etc etc. As such old people had value in the accumulated knowledge they could hand down to the younger members of society.

With modern literature and especially the internet, there is access to a massive repository of data much easier accessible that repeating yourself 17,000 times to your grandad trying to be understood. Old people's one redeeming value has been replaced by a system that is broader, deeper and easier than accessing that data through a person as an interface.

While plenty of old people can support themselves, and long may they do so, by the time they reach needing 24 hour care, lots of medical complication etc etc what is the point of them being alive.

In my case, I'd hope someone just puts me out of my misery if I live to be that old if I am incapable to taking myself out. My brother gives me a life expectancy of 35 Laughing so I may not even have to worry about such things!

What about the young/middle aged people who need 24 hour handouts, healthcare, housing etc and produce nothing of value to society in return?

Quite so, send em of to the soylent factory?

At least you can stick a young 'un in a labour camp for a few years to get some use out of them. Not so effective with the oldies.

Was trying to start a discussion on changing "storage" of collective experience, rather that the most effective way to cull tbh Embarassed

I guess the 'old people knowledge/experience' changes and needs to be replenished as time goes on. My generation will obviously be infinitely valuable to our kids and grandkids for banging on about vinyl records, life before mobiles and t'internet, when 5p's were visible to the naked eye, the cultural importance of The A-Team etc. We'll be priceless and worshipped as small wrinkly gods/goddesses of information Laughing

Nah, not at all, you can't find out EVERYTHING on the internet, there's LOADS it's no good for. Questions such as "Where was it i dropped that massive ice cream when I was a kid and cried ALL the way up the hill to the castle cos you wouldn't buy me another one, Grandma?"

Plus, so long as they aint gone doolally, the retired ones make handy cheap babysitters.

Well... most of them do.

They aren't really obsolete as they are still consumers effectively redistributing wealth accumulated through their working lives.
We hear a lot about problems with some needing care for years but the majority manage perfectly well until the last few weeks.

There is of course anoither issue - you presume that all the lovely "information" on the webby thing is CORRECT. Believe me it is NOT. For many things Wikipedia is the prime example of wrongness. Even Britannica has parts that are blatently incorrect - I know because I have been involved in editing some technical bits of said tome. Having said that, the bits I have submitted are fine TODAY, but will be out of date in 20 - 30 years.

i go down and see my mum and nan each week, off down shortly actually.

nan usually has some interesting tale of her younger days.

she was a commercial vehicle driver for perry's vauxhall, owned and ran a pet shop, ran a bakery, hardware store, used to bake professional cakes including making all the sugar/pastry based flowers and god only knows what else, she was an amazing painter before arthritis. and thats just off the top of my head.

always been a good, reliable source of help and information.

the stupid bitch down the road however, bragges about never working a day in her life sponging off welfare all her life and not knowing her arse from her chin. to which i really want to inform her both her arse and face have 1 thing in common, they both chat shit.

so yes, some people are fucking useless, others are still damn awesome.

Just to be clear, if I ever wanted a proper top-notch, first rate job doing, whether it was tuning an engine or making some bespoke furniture etc etc. The type of person I'd seek out to do the work would be some retired (or just about to) old-school chap who'd been doing the thing all his life. They don't seem to make them like that anymore Sad

^^This.

I used to own a Mk2 MR2 which, like a lot of Jap imports had feck all in the way of rustproofing.
It failed an MOT because it required some welding doing to one of the sills.
I took it to a place that had been recommended to me, showed them the problem, they did the minimum required and charged me a fair few quid.
The Jappo rust-bucket then failed the next MOT on rusty sills (on the other side this time). I got given the name of a chap who was someone at the garage's Uncle's cousin's brother (or similar) who had retired from the trade but liked to keep his hand in.

I took the car to him, he looked it over, we agreed a price, and I left the car with him.

Not only did he do the welding I'd asked for, he also then rust-proofed over his work, reworked the welds the previous place had done (because he didn't think they were that good), rust-proofed those, rang me up to say he was finished and had a bit of spare time so would I like him to drop the car back in re-test?

When I picked the car back up, he made me a brew, we had a chat, I inspected his work and was thoroughly impressed. I gave him an extra £20 on top of the price we'd agreed because he'd done such a good job (which he reluctantly accepted after a bit of persuasion), and it was still £40 cheaper than the 'professionals' who'd previously done the welding for me.

What a top bloke! I've still got his number, and any future welding requirements will be going straight through to him.

Thumbs Up

I have to agree, I'm a craftsman/fitter by trade which means I can do a bit of most things, but basically a master of none.
I can burn and weld to a reasonably proficient standard, but some of the old boys who have done it for most of their lives, well I cant touch their work or standards.

That's not to say they are all equal mind Wink

As for information, tips and tricks plus helpful shortcuts as well, you cant beat the grizzly old lads that might move slow but can still do the job faster and to a better standard then the younger lads.

I really don't understand how/why people can rant about "old people".

I'm 21. I could rant about 31 year olds but I don't, because it wouldn't make sense, because 31 is just a number, and it is a number that will be assigned to me eventually. The same goes for all ages.

Old people, in most cases, have generally 'done their bit', spent a lifetime working and surviving, and are now unable to do so as productively as younger members of society. It's certainly a measure of how civilised and advanced we are how well we take care of our older citizens.

When you reach this age, your attitude of "just put me out of my misery" will be long gone, I am quite sure.

Maybe. I can't say for certain until I'm there obviously. Same with getting spazzed in a bike accident. Me, my dad and sister all have told the rest of the family the same thing: "If I'm majorly crippled do the decent thing and put me down".

My dad, as a 53 year old man, has said perfectly seriously, "If you ever think its time for me to go into a care/nursing home, its time for me to go".

I don't want to be a burden on others ,while I can pull my own weight and stand on my own feet alls well. Also the physical side of aging too, I don't want to have a slowly failing body. I imagine there will reach a point when I can't do XYZ that I used to be able to, and will simply have had enough.

Can't say I disagree there.....

The other day I caught myself thinking:
"Well maybe if I got a job and worked real hard for 5 years saving lots of cash, I'd have a nice lump sum towards a house..."

Laughing

It's started already, someone toss me a glock.

Alternatively you could sponge of the old man for the next 30 years, stick him in a home and sell your sister to someone who wants a residency visa Laughing
