He am de law!

On the subject of another Judge with a similar name, has anyone seen the new 'Judge Dredd' movie?

(I saw a mention of it in the 'new film' thread, but thought I'd give it its own thread)

I was/am an absolute avid fan of 2000AD, and started collecting it in the early 80s.

I never watched the first JD film (with Sly Stallone as JD), as I just couldn't picture him as Dredd (John J Rambo yes, but JD, no).

So, who has seen it, and what did you think?

More importantly - if you have seen it, are you a 2000AD fan too?

I started with 2000AD Issue 1. Dredd first appeared in issue 2 I believe.

You're right about Sly playing Dredd, Arnie would have been a better choice.

What I really hated about the movie though was how they took bits of the early 2000AD Dredd epics (which ran for weeks) and crammed them all into one film. Really they should have made individual movies based on:

The Robot Wars - The robot slaves that Mega City 1 depended on launched a revolt causing a full scale war between the machines and humans.

The Cursed Earth - An overland mission to take medical supplies to Mega City 2, passing through all kinds of weird, wonderful and pretty lethal places on the way (this is where the cannibalistic Angel brothers came from)

Judge Cal. - Basically the story of the insane Roman emperor Caligula but here he's the Chief Judge.

Three bloody brilliant sci-fi adventures!

I'm currently re-reading 2000AD from the start. Sold the comics years ago but recently found issues 1-1580 in .cbr format suitable for a tablet Very Happy

As to the new film, not watched it yet but fully intend to. I like Karl Urban anyway but apparently he requested a condition on his contract for the film - at no point was he to take the helmet off. I was sold after hearing that, nice to see an actor looking into a well established character and mythos before jumping on board.

Watched with some friends last night in 3D. Brilliant, when I saw the trailer I honestly thought it would be a little naff, but the way its been done I really enjoyed.

Coming from someone who's never known the history/2000AD etc.

As long as he doesn't say "Eyoiamthalooor" instead of "I am the law" then he's won over Stallone already.

And if the new movie doesn't have Rob Schneider, they might be on to a winner!

Oooooo, that's a blast from the past! Off topic-ish were 2000AD the ones that had a hairy celtic warrior bod in them? Slane?

I went out with a bloke who was into that and well. . . .there were some cool games and stuff Embarassed . But it's just made it all pop back into my head. I remember that character but can't ever remember where he's from Rolling Eyes but 2000AD sounds familiar.

To me, the best Dredd stories were the ones where Judges are fairly peripheral, and instead they explore the possibilities of Mega City 1. I'm thinking Marlon Shakespeare's dad heading eggs into a bucket.

I haven't seen the new one yet, so to date I still consider the best portrayal of the distinctive flavour of the Dredd-iverse in general to be The Fifth Element. It captures the grimy baroque ridiculous grandeur of it - or as I imagine it - very well, deliberately or otherwise.

Chopper lives!

I always thought they could have done something with Strontium Dog, Rogue Trooper or maybes Bad Company.

Not seen the new Dreed flick yet but anything will be an improvement on the Sly version.

Off topic but the 2000 ad audio dramas that big finish did were excellent especially the stron dog ones, Simon Pegg as Johnny Alpha

A friend of mine went to see it last night I think and couldn’t praise it enough.
The film with Stallone was brilliant for the first half, up until the point of meeting and killing the Angel family. After that it was quite the shower of shit.
I thought Stallone was a good Dread though. Thumbs Up

Judge Dredd doesnt go around shooting people in the face screaming I AM THE LAW I AM THE LAW!

He has style.

Same thing they did to James Bond.

I liked the new one. Certainly kept me entertained. Suitably dour and very violent. It certainly earns the 18 rating.

3D is a bit of a chocolate teapot though. It would be just as watchable in 2D. The pretty slo-mo bits (integral to the “plot”) are lavishly executed though.

Apparently it doesn’t compare well to The Raid, the recent film with which it shares an unfortunate amount of storyline, but I haven’t seen The Raid so can’t comment on the truth of that opinion.

Storming a Block is classic Dredd though, they're just reclaiming it.

Quite want to see it now. Thinking

That be Slaine.
I was a big fan.

And yes Mr G, I too was an avid fan of 2000AD (and a fair few other comics, I regularly bought Coven too - as I am a big fan of their artwork particularly).

I did watch Sylvester Stallone's terrible performance in the first Dredd movie, and I was mortified they chose an illiterate 'short' actor such as he. Grrr.

I haven't watched the latest film 'yet' though I have been assured by trusted fans, that it is bloody brilliant. I have yet to watch myself to be able to comment further.

Geek-mode: I am going to name drop now... one of the freelance illustrators from 2000AD : Alan Langford, used to come into the print shop where I worked a couple of years ago. He has a passion for equestrian artwork, and he always let me have a print of his latest artwork, and he signed each one for me. Mr. Green Thumbs Up

Damn threads made me want to dig out my old 2000 AD books but can't remember where I buried them, been years since I last read them.

& the mention of Rogue Trooper, didn't they do a PS2 game of that?? Be interesting to see if that could be realised into a film, doubt it would be any good though.

May go see Dredd next week I have to admit watching the trailers I have faith in the direction of it, as for Sly as JD? he had the chin for it just should have kept the helmet on and his jaw wired shut with somebody else miming the words (think James Earl Jones-Darth Vader Razz ).

Just seen it, thought it was bloody excellent!
Without ruining it for anyone who's not seen it yet, I quite liked the fact that they made it quite claustrophobic by keeping the story to a single block, rather than try to explore the whole of mega city1.
And there's a couple of nice little easter eggs for the long term fans to spot as well.
Clearly begging for a sequel and I thought Mr Urban nailed the part quite nicely.

Can anyone tell me what bike they've used as a base for the lawmaster though? All google is throwing up is loads of pictures from January last year....

According to Total Film it's based on the Suzuki GSX750S.

Saw it on Saturday, bloody loved it. Never read 2000AD, tempted to get this though

Not a 2000AD Question Fan, never really had comics as a kid and don't really care for them much now.

However saw the film last night at the cinema split costs with friend, the movie itself was the best film after avengers that I've seen this year. Depending how taken 2 or the resident evil film this will stay at 2nd best in my opinion.

Lots of action just as expected in dredd films, still rank the 1995 film over this though just for the quote below...

Quote:
... you're toast. I forgot to mention it: your new friends, they're cannibals.

Overall really enjoyed the film and can tell that they can easily make another follow on, especially with the new partner. Also the drug slowmo I'd love to try if it were real, really showed everything down amazingly true bliss.
