On my dirt bike the clocks go to 999 miles and reset as oil changes need to be done every 500 miles approx.

I found that when the clocks get to 479 miles and i change the oil i have to turn back the clocks manually and it takes almost 20 minutes to turn them back to zero.

Then i had a brain storm

only took 2 minutes on full rpm.

That looks like a tripometer rather than a odometer, I can't believe any bike only goes up to 1k. Why are you bothering to reset it at all?

Surely that knob on the left hand side is used to reset the trip counter? Does it not push in, and turn the other way?

Yeah, I meant left! Embarassed

Maybe the knob on the left of the clock is used to reset the mileometer.I have this on the OEM one on from my XR400R.I adapted a small speedometer from a scooter, which goes up to 9999 miles.Cost about a fiver and is fun when the needle goes to the maximum of 40mph - and then carries on to the stop needle, which might or might not be about 75mph.
