Am wanting to paint the tank to match my new panels but don't know where to start. Have got the base coat and laquer waiting but getting conflicting advice on how to do it. Help??

Put the base coat on, let it dry then spray the laquer over it. Wink

Yeah yeah suppose I asked for those. The tank is currently a different colour and lacquered already. Do I just take it back to bare metal and start from scratch or can I key the laquer that's on and go from there using that as my primer and then base coat and new laquer straight on top or do I sand the base coat back again???

If the paint that is on there is in reasonably good condition I would be tempted to flat it down, so that any imperfections are removed then spray over it.

If it is pretty ropey i.e.has lots of dents, rust or deep scratches I would probably strip it off and start again.

Also if the paint on there is enamel based (such as hammerite) you will get a reaction when you spray over it with a solvent containing paint.

In that case again you will need to strip it all off.

If the tank needs filler you will have to strip the area down to bare metal, as filler will not stick properly to paint.

Te paint that is on there is in good nick apart from one small dent and one deep scratch so the next question is can I use filler on top of the paint or does it need to be applied to the bare metal only. And how long will it take to show a reaction? Will it show as soon as I apply the first coat so I know not to go any further. I really want to try and do this myself rather than pay to have it done so sorry for going on.

The area with the dent will need to be sanded back to bare metal if you wish to apply filler.

If you get a paint reaction it will show pretty quickly from when it is applied. It looks like blisters on the paint surface.

I would guess that the paint that is already on there will either be an Acrylic like 2 pack or cellulose. In which case the Aerosol will be fine over the top.
