I was travelling down the A1 on Friday, saw my exit and pulled over. Bloody fiesta in front of be was doing 60, oh the three bar sign - plenty of time for an overtake I thought.

Cue a blast of acceleration and me exiting just as the slip road started. Oh, but what's this? The slip road is tiny! Oh shit oh shit oh shit! I manage the sharpest braking I've ever managed - the monster was up on the front wheel and I left a huge black mark without skidding (much). Unfortunately I'm still not going slow enough to manage the turn so I let go of the front brakes just before the curb - smash and somehow I'm still on the bike. I quickly get off the grass and pretend it was all intentional...

Pootled the next hundred miles and have a wheel heading over from eBay. Very lucky escape - I have no idea quite how I stayed on it. I bent the key but don't remember my feet leaving the pegs. Forks are fortunately good still.

Don't think this quite warrants the spill counter.

Photo not displaying for me - Remove the 's' from 'https'

That looks like it's took a nasty bump, glad you managed to keep it under control! I don't think anyone can complain about it not making the spill counter.

Trying Dropbox iPad for the first time, I'll sort it ASAP.

<edit>And it wasn't the https thing, it was a silly redirect thing. The https was momentary before I switched to skydive instead of dropbox

Shocked

Any way you can fix that wheel, or would heating it/smashing it weaken it too much?

Why did you not save a lot of trouble and come off at the next junction?

Certainly there are bits of the A1 that are truly awful. The old A1 on the bit too and from Squires used to be poor with no actual slip roads on or off it, more like large T junctions. People tended to use it as their local shortcut. If people missed a junction I've seen cars actually reverse along it. Tractors were even using it, still do in some sections.

tl;dr version, I agree, I really hate the old A1.

Glad no permanent damage and you're able to gain some experience.

Thumbs Up

I'd been a silly boy doing the late overtake pre-junction. The first bit of braking brought the car I'd overtaken very close.

At that point the emergency situation kind of took over, and no amount of coulda, shoulda or even speculating about how I made the choices I did will help. I reacted the way I did, and then like everyone built up the picture of quite what happened afterwards.

Basically, the first choice was the wrong one, after that I was a passenger to my reactions.

Supposedly can be fixed - rough quote was £50+ without the guy seeing it. £89.99 for a newish wheel Smile

I'm sure it's possible. I've not quite managed to capture the fact that it's flattened the inner rim a bit too.

Once I've replaced the wheel I'll have a go at straightening the other one and stick it on eBay.

Correct use of the word "brought"! I haven't seen that for ages! Karma for you sir.

Glad you're ok btw. Sometimes you've just got to pull in behind a cage for a bit. Sad but true. Confused
