I'm happy that they made the Twat fork out the fare

but WTF £160 is the upgrade on top of the standard fare
no wonder I refuse to use trains
I can flay anywhere in the Uk return for less than that, or even return to many international destinations

Quote:
George Osborne has been forced to pay for an upgrade after sitting in a first class train carriage with a standard class ticket.

An aide to Mr Osborne initially refused to pay the £160 supplement and said the chancellor did not want to move into standard class, Virgin Trains said.

ITV reporter Rachel Townsend, who was on the same train as the chancellor, Tweeted about the incident.

The chancellor did not comment when he arrived at Euston station.

A Treasury source said Mr Osborne got on a different train from the one planned due to diary change. He had no seat reservation.

The source said the chancellor was happy to pay for an upgrade, for which an aide paid.

and I'll bet they claim that on expenses Rolling Eyes

I would indeed feel honoured if I got to actually sit down! Wink

Anyway if he's surrounded by aides then I'm glad he stays away from the likes of me Angelic

Yes, it's luzly for a few seconds until you realise that his expenses paid fluffer paid for it... out of expenses. We're paying for all of it, and I doubt that the slithy tove was even aware of the kerfuffle.

He may have been trying to save the taxpayers some money by attempting to dodge his fare.

I'm fully aware of the dates involved and don't see how the passage of time alters anything.

He is above us - I can't claim to have set the country's fiscal policy; can you?

Politician in travels first class SHOCKER Laughing

I love all this 'rich boys snobs toffs lording it over us' stuff. So what he travels first class. So what he got a good education. So what he's upper class.

I'd be more happy to discuss his limitations as a chancellor and whether he's been effective in the role. That might be interesting. Or would you rather it was just some bloke named Steve who's just finished his shift at Tesco going home to his council house that was setting fiscal policy just so it's not someone that's snobbish or above you doing it?

Just give me the best qualified and most knowledgeable person doing a very important (and thankless..) job - I don't care whether he's a she, a snob, a working class ex coal miner or a privately educated bloke with a squeaky voice. As long as he's the best person for the job.

Who cares?

If I was rich and standard class was full, it can be horrible sitting in a cramped sweaty carriage then upgrading to first class would not be news worthy. If I was travelling for work, I would claim it back yes.

Surely our Chancellor Mr Osborne should be commended for trying to save taxpayers' money in this way - one hopes that he is as careful with our nation's purse strings!

Wink

I don't see why he doesn't try to dodge the ticket entirely, and hide under a pile of his functionaries' coats.

He earns about £135K IIRC

Not that it really matters, he's worth a few million from personal wealth, same with Cameron.

lol idea:

balance politiciants pay rate with their personal value.

personal value = 2million then they get paid a yearly wage of £30k

personal value = £1 then they get paid a better wage.

and those worth more shouldnt get to bloody reclaim expenses full stop.

if your rich, bloody spend some.

This seems like a total non-story for poor people to get worked up over.

I'm not sure if Virgin to anytime returns for first class - it seems that he had an anytime return ticket, with a first class reservation for a different train. For whatever reason, he wasn't on that train so his ticket didn't allow him first class. So he paid the extra to get a first class seat. I say he, his aide paid it, probably using the government procurement card.

What's the big deal? He is in effect the man in charge of a very powerful company (HM Treasury). It's impossible to get any work done in standard class on a Virgin train - the only hope you have is in the quiet carriage, which on the southbound train is always full of noisy drunk Scots that don't understand the idea of being quiet. Like anyone in his position he travels with a personal assistant or two to sort this sort of thing out, and the ticket got paid.

As for the other comments, he's the chancellor. Someone always hates the chancellor, it's because of them that someone else is better off than you are.

Unless you're dolescum, in which case you should lick the man's shoes for giving you free money, not complain that you don't get enough free money.

I am talking about the thread in general. Because he is a moderately rich guy who wanted to upgrade to first class then its news worthy. Load of bullshit.
