Tasty thread, needs moar Hetzer.

I've heard all sorts of horror stories about GM from hairy tongues to birth defects, not sure how much of it is true though

If you can grow a giant fruit with as much nutrition for less price i'm down for that, I mean we're already making GM babies where you can choose the gender and eye colour

But, I hear monsanto sell their seeds to poor countries for cheap, but then they force them to buy the pesticides and shit to keep them alive so we're getting weird chemicals in them

Don't know enough about it, would like to

Daily fail link doesn't help Thumbs Up Thumbs Down

Google 'terminator seeds'. They force the farmers in third world countries to continually buy seeds and the GM crop prevents them taking seedlings etc.

Grrr. They really are wrecking the planet with their crazy science but all we ever hear about is CO2 bullshit.

This is not evidence of Monsanto's evil. Even the DM can't hide what a terrible unscientific study this has been. The authors released it without allowing external review, there are questions about the control group and no comments on the statistical significance of the results.

In short, the DM has written another inflammatory headline in the hope of selling more papers to middle England.

Look at their track record on the vaccination scandal (and look at the Irish DM - same owners - who were campaigning for more vaccinations at the same time and tell me that it's not about selling papers rather than informing the public).

Others have already mentioned the terminator genes that should really be the target of public ire, not some half baked study with serious procedural concerns.

Oh, pfft, rats get tumours if you expose them to daytime soaps or harsh language.

You know what kills you quicker than pesticide-dripping GM food? No food.

There's no call for us in the civilised world to be eating GM, we can afford the waste of 100% natural crops that have been 100% naturally grown using 100% natural dead-dinosaur fertilisers, pesticides and cross breeding.

But I pity any brain that can think "GM bad" and "Must save the starving masses in Outer Elbonia" without recognising the dichotomy.

Of course it is. You do realise weaponized food was Monsanto's bread and butter during Vietnam don't you?

You think a company that specialised in creating ill effects doesn't realise that the GM crops they create - with tolerance to roundup FFS - are causing organ damage?

Grow up. Monsanto has enough financial clout to get away with anything, much like other similar sized global corps do.

Alpha, you really need to educate yourself on this one mate - GM crops and picking a boy/girl embryo are two completely different things Wink They don't 'genetically modify' a kid to be a boy/girl.

"...concerns include the potential for organisms insects and viruses to evolve and become more powerful and overcome the resistant GM animals and plants. Some scientists also are concerned that GM ingredients may cause toxic poisoning, allergic reactions, antibiotic resistance, and even cancer in humans. Research hasn’t proven all the concerns, but there’s enough evidence to warrant caution."

So your massive GM fruit wipes out all the original none-GM fruit of it's variety on the planet, then gets taken over by some virus and is wiped out itself. Bye bye banana Crying or Very sad Just one reason I am very glad that somewhere in the deepest darkest iciest parts of the world, there is a massive seed store. At least with that we have a chance of sorting out what GM crops will inevitably fuck up.

I'm unsure of your point. Are you telling me that we shouldn't but others in the third world should? They already do in some areas.

We should do what Hungary recently did.

This is from July 22, 2011, International Business Times:

Hungary Destroys All Monsanto GMO Maize Fields

In an effort to rid the country of Monsanto's GMO products, Hungary has stepped up the pace. This looks like its going to be another slap in the face for Monsanto. A new regulation was introduced this March which stipulates that seeds are supposed to be checked for GMO before they are introduced to the market. Unfortunately, some GMO seeds made it to the farmers without them knowing it.

Almost 1000 acres of maize found to have been grown with genetically modified seeds have been destroyed throughout Hungary deputy state secretary of the Ministry of Rural Development Lajos Bognar said. The GMO maize has been ploughed under, said Lajos Bognar, but pollen has not spread from the maize, he added.

Unlike several EU members, GMO seeds are banned in Hungary. The checks will continue despite the fact that seed traders are obliged to make sure that their products are GMO free, Bognar said. During their investigation, controllers have found Pioneer and Monsanto products among the seeds planted.

Did you read the rest of my post? The study is poorly conceived at best, deceitful at worst. I don't disagree with your feeling, but this is not a study that proves anything. The DM then do their standard scare tactics on top.

So, you grow up - learn to be less reactionary and don't fall for 'confirmation bias'. Pick evidence to support your point more carefully, this is not what you're looking for. If you align yourself with idiots or charlatans you end up looking like one too. Take the advice, like I said I don't disagree with you but I do see the gaping holes in this particular piece of 'science' and 'journalism'.

Hmm..

Quote:
Seralini believes his latest lifetime rat tests give a more realistic and authoritative view of risks than the 90-day feeding trials that form the basis of GM crop approvals, since three months is only the equivalent of early adulthood in rats.

Oh, how terrible. They actually used a longer test case than what is required to allow GMO on our shelves, yet they are the ones who are called 'deceitful'.

Ah, but they were campaigning to remove GM markings from food wrappers so you wouldn't know if it was GM or not.

I feel they wont directly force us, but they'll make normal food 'organic' and 'expensive' !
PS Cheap supermarket sandwiches tend to be GM

I read the back of a cheese and spring onion and the cheese was from a genetically modified rennet, whatever that is

Exactly.

Monsanto introduced a Bill in the US to remove the need to label any GMO products.

But Alpha, you're such a scaremonger conspiracy theorist and Monsanto are lovely and like cute bunny wabbits... Rolling Eyes

Firstly, it's from the Daily Mail. Nuff said etc.

Study was poor. Some rats fed normal diet, some purely on corn. Rats can't survive purely on corn - regardless of GM element.

How many of you drink milk? The standard milk in a supermarket is produced by cows that eat GM feed.

Quite clearly not.
