https://www.motorcycle-usa.com/880/14343/Motorcycle-Article/2013-KTM-1190-Adventure-R-First-Look.aspx

Im of mixed opinion about it. It looks like the standard ADV has gone soft, and is no longer a serious off roader. Gone to a 19 inch front wheel, so only the R model is now worthy of attention.

I like the fact that KTM has now gone tubeless., and a 15 000 km service interval!!

The 2 in one exhaust....hmmm. There will no longer be that KTM sound. And at 518 lb it has put on weight over the 990.

the 150 HP, it will eat rear tyres and chains, and far too much power for off roading.

Cant say it is a bike I am particulraly excited about. Looks like more road biased and with all the gadgets to displace BMW.

I think I will hang on to my 990 dakar. The old 990s and 950 SE bikes will go up in value with people who want to off road tour. There is nothing on the market anymore with a true off road bias.

Like all females, the best looking ones don't make the best wives Mr. Green

When they are available, next time I have my bike in for a service will take one for a test ride

More like a replacement for my GS than for my katoom though

Poor show, gone all BMW on us.

Though, 'soft' versions haven't exactly harmed them.

Single exhaust will be cheaper and easier to replace for a not silly-big version, which is a good thing to my mind.

Do like the idea of remote adjustable suspension - wonder if people'll do kits to get it on the R version now.

My thoughts exactly. they tried to follow BMW and one up them. But they kept the R version as a carrot for the off roaders. I just dont see the need for 150 hp off road. They will have to make it very torquey. You will just spin and eat up tyres. It is a sports bike engine transplanted.

I have that ESA on my BMW. It is handly, but I only use it with a pillion. On the KTM I always forget how much preload I set and have to crank it all the way down, than crank up again.

To mee the best feature is tubeless. OK there is the risk of a sidewall damage or a smiley and sudden air loss with no field repair (unless you carry a tube). But punctures can be repaired at any petrol station or with a plug. No more carrying tyre levers, valve puller, tubes etc. I do find the standard KTM rim a bit soft, but then again I have a small ding (not visible except when balancing) on my BMW tubeless and it doesnt leak.

as it stands, I think the standard ADV is a better replacement for the GS than for the 990. The R version may replace the ADV.

But as an off roader, it is now the 690, or a new 800 KTM comes out with.

Note that you can get various tubeless systems to work with standard spoked rims.

I had a 'tubliss' system on the KTM.
It has the added advantage that it works like a 360 degree rimlock too, so you can run very low pressures and worry even less about the tyre spinning - happilly running 7/8psi in mine on the 690.

I know but I have heard horror stories about them so have never taken the dive.

I would prefer tubeless for the obvious advantages. I usually prefer to battle a bit than deflate signficantly because the the risk of tube pinching. the lower the pressure, the more punctures it seems. Im running the Michelin HD tubes. They run fine to 160 kmh on tar, but balancing rims is a pain.

You guys sound like you know what you're talking about, which means you're probably not their new target market. Wink

Why they didn't just call it the "R1190GS" is probably between them and their lawyers.

I'm with G. Looks more like a BMW. Never my stile of bikes for 2 reasons. 1, I dont go anywhere far enough to use that kind of bike and would see it much the same as owning a land rover for the school run. A waste of a bike. And 2, I'm way too short to even climb onto those tall seats.

LOL. That surely has to be the BMW and KTM next marketting strategy: make lower bikes to tap the under 180 cm tall market. The 990 seat height is 910 mm. surely that must limit sales. the BMW is at 890 mm.

Thats still to tall for me. 89cm = just over 35inches in our money. My inside leg is only 31 inches. Fair enough the compression of my fat arse on the seat would bring it down to a more suitable level but the initial swinging the leg on I'd look like a dwarf trying to mount a shire horse. Laughing

Unfortuntately for you there isnt that much compression, if they are sprung for off road. Im 96 kg and the KTM barely sinks with about no preload.

I'm goin by my jeans measurements. I'm that awkward bastard thats between sizes. I find 32 leg too long and 30 leg a tiny bit too short. Sucks to be me! I'm also losing meat so im now between a 24 and a 36 waist.

I wear similar jeans and don't have a problem - though I don't like my jeans dragging on the floor given the choice. Probably do have longer legs, though they are relatively short for my body (5'11.6" on the doctor's scales.)
