Hi guys

I'm gonna sell my push bike and put a bit of cash towards a new tou.

I've got a budget of around 900 quid max for a bike.

I'm open to any ideas I've been thinking Honda xr 250,400?

Any other bikes recommended within my budget would be greatly appreciated!
Not fussed if 125.250,400 or bigger really

Reliability is top of my list and I'm 6ft 6 so a bigger bike physically would be bang on!

Let the fun commence

Steve

I'd go for a 300cc 2 stroke competition bike (KTM 300EXC, Gas Gas 300EC).

Light weight, decently reliable, very flexible engines.

May not be so great if you've got a long ride to get to your green lanes.

Yes, if you keep an eye out.
Couple of years ago I got a 98 300EXC with 2005 suspension on and some spares for £920 on ebay. Taxed and tested.
Didn't always like starting from cold (just a new plug if I remember, but otherwise fine.)

Proptip: whatever bike you look for always try and get a dual start one. When its cold and wet and you have stalled your bike for the nth time in the middle of a puddle you will yearn for that magical button!

XR's are great, pretty much bullet proof and very easy to work on but a downside to them is that they are on the heavier end of the spectrum. There is a reason why you see so many KTM's out on the lanes though. If you are prepared to travel further you should be able to pick yourself up a bargain if you look long and hard.

Electric start should be a lot less of an issue on a 2 stroke - where it should be a case of just brushing the lever with a smidge of throttle.

Won't get an electric start 2 stroke for that money, but newer KTM 250s and 300s do have it.

Hi Steve, I'm with G on this one, 220 / 250 / 300 2T as can be used for most off-road pursuits, but bit thirsty on the road sections.
This type of thing
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/54-GAS-GAS-EC-250-RED-/230817107754?pt=UK_Motorcycles&hash=item35bdc58f2a#ht_500wt_954
BigTobyD had a Gas Gas ec300, a very under rated bike, with a really smooth power delivery,
There's a few of us close to you ( I'm in Horsham ) so what ever you do get a bike. and out on the lanes Very Happy

This is really good advice, especially if you are new to 'laning, you might expect to be picking the bike up a lot until you get used to it all. I'd say it is slippy hills with bad footing where the electric foot is a godsend.

As a first bike, it doesn't really matter what you get, it is personal preference really ... you will upgrade soon enough to something fancy once you get hooked anyhow!! Very Happy

One thing to watch for with 2nd had dirt bikes is consumables, wheel bearings, swingarm/shock linkages, fork seals, tyres, chain & sprockets, brake pads. Whilst each component my be relatively inexpensive, these all add up! You could soon be spending more 'sorting' a bike with 'potential' than just buying a good one to start with!!!

Good luck.

I have a friend selling a KTM 200 EXC for £1000 and he may be knocked down if you're a bit persuasive. It's a '99. PM if interested.

I'd go for an XR 250 every time, not to heavy & a really friendly power delivery, reliable to.

There are some that are e-start! Cool I think it was an add on kit or only on imports or something - but you can get them!

Perhaps retro-fit one to yours?

The XR250 is indeed a great starter bike (pardon the pun!).

With kickstart 4 strokes it's especially important to make sure they're set up properly. If they're not, it can be a right pain - if they are, you need a lot less effort.

Never really had a problem with a XR, but my DR600 could be rather troublesome, as could the Husaberg 501 when it had the road legal can on.
