Hey guys. I recently tightened my chain (again) but it seems to be loose again. Not loose enough to come off and there is still tension there but it just seems to loosen really quickly after I tighten it? Anyone know what the reason could be? Is it time for a new chain and sprocket? They never seem to last long on my bike for some reason. Smile

What make is the chain? Cheap chains don't take much to stretch them.

To be honest Vincent I don't know. I asked for a better quality chain when it was replaced but I probably got the cheap one put on, just charged more. Are there any specific chain brands I should look for when I have it replaced? Smile

I use a gold Tsubaki X-Link chain. Wear and tear it's great, it's been tightened 3-4 times in the last year. I cant fault it that way considering I do ~45 miles a day, 5 days a week.

The biggest problem with it is, the gold coating has flaked off and it now looks horrible and scabby. I was of the impression that the gold coating was electroplated rather than being painted on!

It's a shame as it looked cracking when it was first put on. I'll be trying a DID one next time.

And you are lubing the chain? Not been mentioned here, and use engine oil in small amounts, works wonders

Gear oil (SAE90) is much better and less likely to fling off Wink

Make sure you clean it as well, once you get a new one...

Petrol Parafinn is the best for cleaning chain's as with a toothbrush

then just put a try underneith the chain so all dirt and shit go's on the tray.

Once cleaned, just get some good quality chain lube, tighten as and when needed Very Happy

Thanks guys. Yeah, I clean it and lube it. I shall look into getting a better chain then. I always adjust it on the stand, so it would be tighter with me sat on it anyway. The last mechanic that looked said there was a fair bit of wear left on it and not to be worried although I may get it changed for a better chain anyway. Smile

even if you get it changed for a better one it will still need routine checks and clean's and lubes to keep it in tip top condition Thumbs Up

If you're over tightening it it will wear and stretch quickly, check the slack against the spec

2 inches i think is tops

if you've changed the chain and not the sprockets the sprockets will wear the chain back to how the old one was generally, change them all at once

+1 for DID chain and sprocket sets

Here is a picture of worn sproket matched with a new sprocket, the shiny sprocket is what your sprocket's " should " look like the old one has got wear on it's teeth. match your sprocket to the one's with the picture to see if your sprockets have any wear. . .

No need to be paranoid if you have tightned the chain correctly it will be fine, only issue you may have whilst putting a new chain on is, it may wear your new chain. ( as someone mentioned above )

I made the very same mistake of buying a cheap chain and sprockets, they lasted 8k miles and were done for.

As someone mentioned above, I brought a Tsubaki set and it never needed adjusting in the 10k miles I put on it prior to writing the bike off.

Buying cheap ended up costing me more in the end, as it often does with crucial parts.
