Aloha,
Basically I'm 16 (not a chav, actually a nice person who understands how much damage i can cause myself by riding like a prat and without any gear) and own a MBK Nitro (Basically a Yamaha Aerox), and over the last month or two I've been noticing a (up until now) fairly slow leak of coolant, so I've been topping it up so that it doesn't run without any coolant. Unfortunately it did run out one day, cue me stood for an hour waiting for a bottle of water and a screwdriver. Eventually got going again and didn't get any more problems, kept the water levels topped up and all seemed ok. The leak is from the crankcase (where the two halves meet up in the middle, right at the bottom) and was a slow dripping (about a drop every minute whilst the engine was warm) however yesterday when i topped the water up, it just pissed it all over the street, dripping about 2 drops a second, and it emptied the reserve in minutes.

My mechanical knowledge isn't great, I'm hoping one of you will tell me all is ok and I can just go hoy some instant-gasket on there, but I'm aware that it might end up being a full engine rebuild. The damn thing is only worth £200 on a really good day, so I'm not keen on spending a lot on fixing it. So BCF, bestow upon me my your fantastic knowledge please,

Cheers,
Liam,

TL;DR Stupid scooter thing is leaking coolant rapidly from the crankcase, quick, cheap fix, or scrap the damn thing?

i would take the water pump out and have a mooch in there .inspect it

... and just incase
https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_nkw=yamaha+aerox+water+pump&_sacat=0&_odkw=yamaha+aerox+engine&_osacat=0

and go ahead and do the instant gasket as well

Water pump seems a pretty good guess,

If your not willing to Spend much on it and if you say it's only worth £200 it's obviously not worth paying the garage 3 hours to do it,

If its a low mileage scooter I would say yeah do it.

If its higher mileage, I'd say browse eBay for a second has decent engine, not hard to fit to be honest. And I reakon someone with little mechanical knowledge could do it with the help of us at BCF Smile

Cheers for the quick replies,
I thought it might be the water pump at first, but i assumed the worst i suppose.

What should I look for on the water pump? or am I best to just part with a tenner and buy a new one?

Also, can I put the instant gasket on the outside of the the crankcase, or do I have to attempt to open the case without dropping everything everywhere and then put the stuff in?

My mechanical knowledge isn't that great yet, but I am learning, cheers for the help once again Karma Thumbs Up

For the price of it you may as well jus replace it,

Get the case apart and do the job properly.

If you just seal the case your bike won't be cooling correctly which will in turn damage your Engine.

Matt

BTW - Haynes manual is what you need.
