BUT where are the mudguards?!

What headset did you have out of interest? Wondering if it is a faulty design as it shouldn't happen really. Mine was a FSA Orbit CE.

I think rim/tyre logo alignment is a commandment of the velomonati?

Mudguards are attachable.

My next bike will be a dedicated light steel bike like the Genesis Equilibrium with proper guard mounts. I then intend to give racing a go, so will use the Focus pictured and keep my Giant TCR as a summer steed.

Had one of these since 2011, done lots of miles on it and it's a really enjoyable bike to ride.

I have no idea, was just what came with the frame, I have a Cane Creek one in there now, we shall see how that fares.

Mine is a Dahon Vitesse D3 with a seven speed hub fitted, fits in the back of the car easily when folded and weighs very little.

I've got a Fuji Nevada 1.0 2012 model, its a hardtail XC mountain bike. Changed a lot of stuff on it but havent been cycling recently, got some marzocchi forks, wider bars etc, some nice tyres and whatnot. I ride it like a downhill bike though so im surprised I haven't snapped my forks yet or bent the frame completely Laughing

It's new bike time! Giving these Germans a go, hopefully their stereotypical engineering will apply to this as well (but I did do a load of research beforehand to verify this Laughing)

A complete pain in the arse to use on the roads, bone shaking on the Forestry Commission black runs and bloody scary wondering if it'll crush you when you go base over apex! Laughing
Does have a habit of shredding rear chainsets for a pastime!

Genuine question.

Looks like a trials bike to me by the geometry and gearing (not a style I'm massively into). Yeah?

No front brake? Confused

Why?

And if the answer is weight, why isn't it radial spoked?

It's a dirt jump/skatepark specific bike. Best way to describe it is the MTB equivalent of a BMX. For riding this kind of stuff (riding starts at 2:40).

The idea with dirt jumps and skateparks is that you get as much pump and flow from the jumps/park features as possible instead of pedalling between each jump. You only really need to put a few cranks in at the start of a line to get going and then as long as you ride smoothly you should be able to generate speed from pumping the steep landings and rollers between jumps. Smoothness is key.

I have ridden jumps chainless before now (thanks to my non existent maintenance schedule Laughing) and there are various pumptrack challenges where the aim of the game is to get around the track as fast as possible without pedalling meaning that you have to pump every berm, roller and jump as much as possible. The super short back ends on this kind of bike makes that easier than on a more conventional XC type mountain bike and you would generally run the forks really hard as well for this style of riding. They're only there to take the sting out of big landings or when it all goes a bit Pete Tong anyway.

You don't generally run a front brake as you don't really need one in a dirt jump/skatepark/pumptrack environment but some people do, personal preference I suppose. You do see a lot of the pro's running a lightweight XC wheel up front with a lighter tyre but as jumps get bigger and the chance of coming up short or heavier landings increase you'll see the bikes being spec'd with tougher components. The tyres are pretty much slicks for less rolling resistance between jumps and they are run at pretty high pressures - I run mine at 65psi (ish).

The smaller frames and low stand over height makes it easier to throw the bike around in the air for tricks but they're not necessarily light. My bike comes in at about 28lbs but I could probably make it a bit lighter with a few different component choices.

what's the riding scene like in Deutschland?

As for the stereotypical engineering, from my experience with last bikes, they live up to it. I have their rear hub, zakk(?). Best SS hub I've had, completely bombproof.

Berlin is great for dirt jumps, there are at least 7 really good spots within half an hour of where I live (just off the top of my head) and there are more if you're prepared to travel about an hour out of the city. There are a few decent skateparks about and the street riding is pretty good as you'd expect for a massive city. There are plenty of pumptracks popping up too.

There's only one hill in Berlin though so in terms of actual mountain biking there isn't much going on here. The hill is actually rubble from Berlin piled up after the war, it's called Teufelsberg There are trails on it though.

If you go to the South West of Germany there's loads of mountain biking. Winterberg Bikepark has everything from beginner blue trails to all the crazy slopestyle/DH stuff you see the pro's riding, it's lift assisted too. I'm hopefully getting a trip organised there this summer, I hope it all comes together!

I can vouch for Winterberg.

There's not many "on the map" tracks. But there's probably a fair bit I missed had I explored more.
The trails are fucking sweet though. The one run that sticks in my mind is basically a smooth and flowy Berm, jump, berm , jump arrangement and was SO much fun!! And then the SS park is fecking sweet with all the ladder drops and what not. Good to session in the evenings after the lifts a shut off.

The town itself is fairly lame. Not much nightlife and the pubs that were open weren't exactly busy. I was however restricted by not being a driver at that point so couldn't explore the nearby towns etc.

I'd go back again for a trip but I think all in all if I were booking now i'd prefer to go to somewhere new and explore different mountains.

Frame: Giant Defy 0

Stands me in about £450 and rides superb

Here's the MTB:

Voodoo Bantu with ugraded groupset (Deore shifters/chainset, XT/LX mechs)

I really want to sort the brakes on it though.

I have a massive urge to buy a full-sus at the moment which is ridiculous seeing as I live in Norfolk and that it would get use maybe 3-4 times a year Very Happy

A week ago I did THIS to my foot!

https://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xap1/t1.0-9/1512793_10152574951665712_5576676660828044995_n.jpg

Sprained my ankle when I came off clipped in... I was manualling over some roots and didn't cover the back brake!

So on the Saturday, I went to Noah's Bike shop in Stroud to order my next rig; time to hit the alps and extreme graded trails now! Picked it up today and already stuck a dropper seatpost; Rockshox reverb on it!

2014 Specialized Enduro Comp 29er

https://scontent-a-lhr.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xap1/t1.0-9/10450742_10152597786070712_2588761956181603680_n.jpg

The spec list is SILLY, so I expect it to decimate my local gnarly trails. OK, it's a smidge heavier than my current bike, but with 29" wheels and 160mm travel front and rear with the rockshox pike and fox CTD rear shock, it's killer quick based on my 5 mile shakedown. Need to rest 4-5 more weeks before I can hit the trails in anger!

My other trail bike

Having had a Carrera Subway 2 for over 4 years.
I fancied a racer Laughing
Cycle to work scheme got myself this.
Will work out at £195 over the year after deductions etc. That was for £300. Got a new helmet, inner tubes , water bottle etc to make up the price as the bike was only £242
Only had a blast on the trainer to get the seat and bars adjusted etc.
Very comfy .
Now got my SPD pedals fitted.
And took a fair bit of time off my 10 mile timed stint.
Well happy with it.

Got my mate to advise me ( Avid cycle and triathlon lad ).
He raised the seat higher than what I thought

He advised that whilst you are seated and on the hoods ( Brakes to me ). That ideally you should not see the front axle.
I could on standard.
He then gave me a shorter stem. and I rotated the bars up a bit.
Holy sheeeet.
Huge difference to my lower back. I had a disc operation 17 years ago so still suffer a bit.
These changes have made the bike so much easier to ride and far more comfortable.

Bike number three has just been purchased and awaiting delivery. This is to be my all year bike, plus a bit of light touring and all day ride merchant.

Reynolds 725 steel frame, with carbon forks. Full Tiagra 10 speed which will do the job nicely and I think the silver finish looks awesome.

Just need to order some mudguards, stainless steel bottle holders and silver pedals to finish it off.
