Wet manhole covers

Had my first really wet ride today, and had a couple of exciting and stimulating experiences with these. First was a surprise, braking for traffic lights, the front went on a manhole cover. Fortunately I've got many years of all weather cycling under my belt, during which I've lost both ends many times, and I guess muscle memory kicked in, so I caught it with no undue sphincter clenching. Might have been interesting if there had been further to slide, however! Less surprisingly, accelerating away from another set of lights up a hill I had some rear wheel spin and accompanying sidewaysness, again caught with no problem.

So in summary, manhole covers are slippery in the wet. Not something I'd been expecting so much, but I'll be on the lookout for them in future .

Watch out for thick painted lines too - like the ones marking out bus stops or cycle lanes - equally slippy in the wet...

Any "raised" surface on the road should be met with due care & attention - hazard lines, chevrons etc:.

Most of the time you know what to expect from them, but thet can & do catch bikers out so take extra care matey

Good advice and will do. I was being cautious anyway; less lean angle in bends, longer braking distances, and general care and attention. The longer you do anything, the more things get added to your mental arsenal of things to watch out for.

I was only ever caught out by a wet cover once. Learned my lesson after that!

This is why they tell you on your lessons to go around them - even in the dry, just to get into the habit. Helps a lot I think, I make it into a little game - I lose the game if I go over one

Haha, every time I see a manhole cover and don't have time to avoid it I think, "noooooo!". Or I go as straight as I can and smooth along over like it's a tightrope act. Hah!
