Before you hardcore winter riders label me a pussy, you should know I'm a pleasure summer rider and I have no intentions of riding my bike in rain, salt, grit or any other shit this god forsaken island has to throw at me over the winter!!

However I do have a small dilemma, tax runs out at the end of this month so do I call it time at the end of the month & SORN for winter?! Or do I tax it for 6 months and get a few more rides in (will the weather really hold for October) and then SORN/garage it and get a refund on said tax...

Is it time to pack the summer toy away?! Experts of the british climate have your say!!

Not any time soon mate but seen as I'd like to build up a NCB and there's always the possibility of it getting knicked I have no intention of cancelling the insurance tbh!

EDIT; saying that could I change from FComp to TPFT to save myself money or can u not do that mid term?!

How much is the tax? If its 15 quid it's not worth SORNing but if it's a cost you could do without it might be worth getting it winter ready.

Some of the best riding weather can be in October as the leaves change.
But next week looks shit.

£30 for 6 months but I can always get it refunded mate, of what I don't use anyway. I'm really curious to know now if u can change ur level of policy cover now and keep ur policy going?

I'd say tuck it up for the winter. weathers pretty cold and shit at the minute and its only going downhill from here.

Went out on my 600rr (fair weather bike) earlier and was definately bordering on really cold, put it in the garage after and i think its gonna be staying there till next year now. Only renewed the tax last month.... wish i had just sorned it now Confused

To be honest I'll be keeping mine road legal even though I don't use it every day. Still worth it for the odd sunny day blast!

This is a stickler, u do get the odd day where it's bright and bitterly cold but there's nothing quite like wheeling the bike out and blasting down the road!!

Personally, even if I didn't ride to work through winter I'd keep it taxed.

Cost isn't a big deal and I'd want it insured anyway so that I can move it if need be, and it is insured if the local pikeys fancy pilfering it.

On top of that, you get the odd winter sunday morning, where the sun is just breaking over the horizon, the air is crisp, the trees are bare so visibility is ace and the roads are empty. Some of my favourite rides of the year were on dry winter mornings, you can't beat tearing through barren countryside as a wake up call.

It only bit me in the ass the once, when I took a turning to find the road white with frost with frozen waterways either side - proper butt clencher.

If you're keeping the insurance running then you may as well keep the tax running as well. The few pennies that you will receive as a refund will hardly be worth the effort of completing the refund claim and who knows, you may yet manage to squeeze in the odd decent riding day between now and next spring.

I don't need my bike for commuting, but again like to keep it taxed and ready. I found I got more use out of it during last Oct,Nov and December than over the wash out summer.

Someone please correct me if I am wrong, but do you have to insure it now even when it's SORN'ed?

Not really. The law says that if you wish to leave a vehicle for an extended period of time uninsured you HAVE to SORN it. They give you a period of grace but it is a criminal offence to leave a vehicle, even in your garage, uninsured without it SORN'ed.

I only ride on nice days and I was out Christmas Eve last year so I'd say it's a bit early yet.

Man up, get some proper gear and use it in the winter.
Some of the best days riding ive had are on cold rainy days.

I keep mine taxed all year round, it's only £60 odd, so not exactly going to break the bank. Needs a good clean and then going to move it into my mates garage in the next month or so.

Do you have alternative transport (ie. a car), or only your bike? If you don't then you're not being manly, just making do with what you have. Rode bikes through winter before. It just fucking ruins them. Cheap car ftw.

I work 17 miles away and I have to travel on a dangerous NSL road. This scares the shit out of me because I've already crashed on this road recently because of bad weather, I can't imagine what the winter will be like!

Wait, tuck up for Winter... you mean we've had Summer already? I think I missed it. Sad

As for parking the bike up, I wouldn't do it yet. You may as well tax it to keep it road legal and there is no point "degrading" your level of cover.

I don't think the weather has got to a point yet where it's too cold or wet to ride either. I'm still riding to Uni in jeans at the moment (inb4 safety nazi reply... yes I ought to get some kevlar ones).

@Noxious89123 That's what Winter hacks or just generally terrible bikes like mine are for! Smile
I have the option of taking the bus which should take 30 mins instead of 10-15... but I'll keep riding through it until there's ice and snow. Which I doubt I'll see anyway commuting on busy city roads. Smile
