When I cycle I get a lot of pain in my right knee and a less amount in my left. Sometimes it makes cycling up hill unbearable. Is this a normal thing to experience a bit of pain through strenuous uphill climbs or am I broken ??? If its not normal is it worth my time seeing a Physiotherapist? What are peoples experiences with a physiotherapist??

Thanks Carl.

Do you cycle a lot and do a lot of high impact sports?

Get it looked at else you'll be on crutches/walking sticks by the time you're 50 Thumbs Up

No it's not normal for it to be 'unbearable'
You're wearing down your cartilage, can give you arthritis in the knee, fucking sucks

I cycle maybe 40-50miles minimum a week. I find on a flat I can pedal flat out and have no bother. As soon as I hit a hill it's just pain. I'm thinking it might be worth seeing a physio about it because tbh it's holding me back which is an annoyance lol.

Check your pedals are the same distance out from the middle of the frame.

If you're using SPD pedals, make sure the cleats are in the same place on both.

Get someone to follow you and check you're sitting on the bike square.

My first though was my bike set up but that was done properly and is still perfect. I'll book to see a physio and see what they say. If that comes back as nothing ill just admit defeat on the fact I'm unfit lol.

Nothing to do with being unfit, it's being too fit if anything.
Do you jog or anything else? They're generally worse for knees as cycling you're not slamming down on the joint, cycling is meant to be good training for them really, but uphill there is more resistance..

Knee pain from cycling is very common
https://www.fix-knee-pain.com/cycling-knee-pain/

With riding uphill you have to push down harder on the pedals which means the cartilage gets squished more I figure

See a Physio ftw either way better safe than sorry Thumbs Up

fak i've ended up on the cycling forum, screw you view new posts

Mate of mine rode in competitions for a full year and was experiencing severe knee pain until someone spotted one of her pedals was on the piss which is why I mentioned it.

That was on her flying scot which had campagnola everything.

It's pain above the right and left knee about the size of my fist. Also below the right knee cap just on the end of the knee cap is the worst part.

Change into a lower gear, you are putting too much load through your knee.

Higher cadence = quicker cycling + healthy knees.

Are you using SPD?

Maybe even if it was setup 'right', there is some physical oddity for was taken account of?

Even the lowest gear possible at a crawling pace gives me pain. I've tried finding a gear I'm happy with and I can find some that offer less pain. And no G I don't use SPD wish I did though.

Then you should probably see your GP to be referred to a physio. Most knee problems stem from muscle imbalance. I'd be inclined to suggest you stop cycling as you will just be aggravating the injury.

I spent 18 months out from running with a knee injury. Rest is best.

Hi

I've just got back from seeing a specialist who has set up my new pedals, cleats and shoes. He said that he saw a chap who had serious knee pain and it was a matter of moving his cleat a only a couple of mm on the affected shoe. 3 months later the guy was pain free.

Probably unlikely you will be able to see sat on your bike - I would get someone else (who knows what they are looking at) to check and adjust.

And Alpha - runners have stronger knees than non-runners.

He's not using cleats.

Though, it could still be a 'set up' issue - maybe seat height?

I had bad knee pain before caused by my seat keep moving, didnt realise. Stopped me commuting to work for a few months (30 miles a day)

Im 80% recovered from it, but still get some pain with the set up right, tho the frame is not ideal for my shape. need more distance from the pedals.

Getting used to SPD now, but pulling pedals up and pushing down is confusing. cant seem to do with both legs, but no pain from it. recomend them

I've moved the seat 1 inch higher than it actually should be. It's made the knee pain less but has seemed to have moved the pain to the muscle at the side of my knee. It's less painful this way even if it is supposedly an inch too high.
