Thought I would take my 1st step to learning to ride yesterday after chatting to a guy from the local training centre and being told they were reasonably quiet, so I attempted to book my theory test.

Put all my info in on the website and was told I do not have a motorcycle provisional entitlement on my licence. Odd I thought as i passed my driving test in Oct 2000, therefore I should have it automatically.

I check my counterpart licence and sure enough, the A category expired in 2001!!

Hmmmm...... I rang the DVLA and spoke to a very helpful bloke who told me I was correct and i should have that entitlement and it is most likely human error and a typo as every other entitlement on my licence runs out in 2051.

I sent my licence back last night (missed last post by 5 mins!) and it will take upto 3 weeks for them to investigate and rectify the situation. Annoying thing is, I have only just got my licence back on monday after sending it away for my updated photo!

Am i right in thinking that i will need my licence to book my CBT?

This was not the start of my 2-wheeled life i was hoping for!

Anyway, gives me a bit more time for revision of the highway code Very Happy

When I did my CBT I was required to bring both parts of the licence and repeatedly told that if I couldn't produce them on the day I wouldn't be able to take the course. Not sure if that is their company requirement or one of law, but I'd assume it's the latter.

You may be lucky with the DVLA as I have recently found the turnaround for change of address/catagories pretty quick. under a week in most cases.

Hopefully they will crack on with it.

Yea, as above. No CBT without license in hand.

You can book over the phone in advance but you have to bring it with you (both parts) on the day.

There used to be a thing called a D441 available from the DVLA - it's a temporary letter of entitlement and was valid for CBTs and tests.

You could ask the DVLA for one of these short term although I think they were going to discontinue them at one point.

Vague, sorry.

I'll ring them at lunch and see if this is still in existence. Thanks for the heads up. Thumbs Up

True, you can still book it but if your license hasn't come back then you won't be able to do it.

on a serious note though, they do this all the time. i sent my car license in for an address update. and they sent me a license back all normal. but deleted my entitlement off the system in 2007. i was pulled over last summer and told i didn't have a license.

court ruled in my favour even though the dvla stuck to their guns and said it had to have been revoked!

in the end i produced old court documents i had from 2009 where i'd failed to produce (part time local police station, not my fault) so i'd had to produce all my documents at court and they had double checked everything during an adjournment as all a*ok.

this coupled with the fact that the cps, nor dvla had any record of a motoring offence or other reason for a revokation meant that they didn't have a leg to stand on.

i'm utterly bowled over in amazement that you got someone there to admit fault. my guess is after their investigation they'll decide it is your fault after all

it was even better than that short story...

when they decided that back in 08/09 i hadn't produced, they sent me a letter, i rang and said can i send photocopies. they said yes fine.

thought it'd be done with.

next thing i know i have (no joke) 4 police cars outside and 8 officers in my house to arrest me during valentines night dinner after i'd travelled 4 hours back from uni to cook for the mrs.

they took me to aberystwyth overnight, then to cardiff! 150miles away for court the following morning. on a saturday. on a rugby international day.

was lucky in the end though because that's only reason i had court papers proving i'd been in possession of a valid license after this imaginary 2007 "revokation".

strange how life works out

Hahaha

To be fair, I think he may have said "possibly human error, unless there is something you're not telling me"

Which there isn't. Therefore, give me my entitlement back ballbags!

Hence NEVER EVER send your license back for anything other than passing tests.

Say you have lost it, then when it comes back minus entitlements and they refuse to do anything, you can miraculously find your old license which proves them to be fuckwits Thumbs Up

Mine arrived back from DVLA Monday (had to apply for another, couldn't produce licence for points.. whoops) and they have monumentally cocked up my card Laughing

They have put down that I passed in October last year and I'm <25kW.

My paper clearly states the day I passed, as does the pass certificate Laughing

I'll keep sending the scanned copy to insurers for now... Laughing

When my wife passed her driving test and got her new license, her nationality had changed from UK to NK

If she ever visits South Korea, it's going to be pretty awkward Laughing .
