Hey all im new here.
Im planning a trip for early next year

the only downside is i have just passed my CBT and own a Honda Lead 100 F-5
it has a little over 8,000 on the clock
bought cheep of a mate at work for a first bike / ped

I am looking at getting a Honda 125 in about 5 to 6 months

OK so the trip i have planned will take me about 2 / 3 hours on a 100cc scooter.

My question is this.
would travelling 120 / 180 mile none stop be ok for this bike?

You are planning a trip that lasts 120 miles? FOR NEXT YEAR?

Shitting hell. I spend 2 minutes planning that kind of "trip" on a sunday morning, LOL.

To be honest, no its not great for that kind of bike because you'll be riding at the engines full capacity 95% of the time. They can handle it, but its certainly not gonna be enjoyable for you.

Well yes
For one im a new rider and im not that confident on the bike yet
Two. This isnt just a simple trip that once you arive you park up and fo to the pub/hotel
This trip will be 120 miles to the first stop where we will camp out for 2 nights
The next part is the same sort of thing
The whole trip lasts 7 days

Anyway i plan a head to make sure eveything runs ok
Plus i have to get the time off work
Plus as you may or may not know it is getting very cold outside in a morning and is a little late in the year now for a camping trip

The bike will be fine, it's not much more than a big commute each day. However you won't want to do 2-3 hours non stop, plan in some nice rest stops along the way to break things up. I'm quite a new rider (passed mod2 in June) and have done some decent sized trips on my 'big' bike (Aprilia Pegaso) and find that I can do about 90-100 miles (about between 1 and 1.5 hours) before I have to get off and have a stretch and a walk around, which is also a fairly good time to refuel.

Yeah any Honda 125 4 stroke will handle this no problem, just keep it low in the rev range in 5th gear, try and aim for 60mph on the carriageways just to keep going past the lorry's. If I was you I would pull over every 100 miles just to see everything is ok on the bike.

When you say your " thinking " of buying a 125cc Honda what model of 125 do you mean, reason being Honda do a range of bikes, their most populour 125cc is known as a Honda CBF 125, their good all around bikes but Unfortianltly they have LOAD's of fuel pump issues, some people's CBF's seem to be immune to this and some have had 2 - 3 fuel pumps replaced, I suggest looking on google, or eBay for bikes pick 3 bikes you really like, and use the search option on here to find out any information.

Good luck !

Rolling Eyes

What happened to the free spirit sense of adventure that bikers have?

Back in the day, 17 years old, a group of us would ride from Windsor down to Brighton on 125s (RDs mostly) when the weather was nice. 130 odd miles round trip, took bloody hours, no planning...

The bike I did my round Britain tour on (see my signature) was only capable of doing 55mph. I averaged 150 miles a day.

Bike should be fine. By the way, you sure plan far ahead! I went to Brighton Burn up on a whim! (didn't plan it at all until 10 minutes before taking off and that ended up to be 230 mile trip) Laughing

There are no motorways North of Perth anyway.

From the Borders get either the A7 or the A68 to Edinburgh (depending which side of the country you start.

Then a boring bit where you'll need to take the A985 the A907 to Stirling to avoid the motorway. Then you're on the A84 and anywhere you go from there is good.

I will be making stops every 50 miles or so

Im thinking of the CBR 125
I have seen a few "copies" like the lexmoto and the skyjet that are cheep brand new but i hear good and bad things
Most of the reviews on these are good if you take good care of the bike which i would
i was thinking for £1500 i cant go wrong if i look after it and take care of it. tighten the bolts and stuff
i wouldnt mind if i only got a year out of it

but then i have seen a few honda cbr's 2nd / 3rd hand for a little more than that, but they look in need of some TLC and repairs so im not too sure

Im happy at the moment with my Honda Lead 100 F-5 as it was bought for a little under £300 and has a few scrapes here and there and im not worried if i fall of or damage it anymore than is already is

I will in 5/6 months buy a new bike
something like the Honda CBR or the skyjet / lexmoto
but im not 100% sure yet

Thanks

Don't get a chinese bike.

Any 125cc bike in reasonable condition will be happy to do 180 miles. Bring some chain lube if you really feel adventurous. I wouldn't bother myself.

Do NOT buy a Chinese bike, their no end of hassle, it's all well and good you forking out £1500 on a brand new LEXMOTO but in 2 years time when you put it up for sale for what ever reason it will be worthless,
Because it will be rusted to hell, party's will be broken / very worn.

Your first idea of the Honda CBR I think is your best option, their great little bikes, comfy to ride, good handling, good MPG , you can wear a bag on your back while riding it, good speed, a general good all around bike, don't look for one under ANY circumstances which has been owned by a 17 year old, it will have had its innards ripped out of it.
Try and go for something with under 10,000 miles mature owned,
Remember, some service history is better than NO service history.
I would say you could pick up a VERY nice condition & lower mileage one for under £1800.

Thanks for that stink wheel, never been to Scotland before, been all the way around the world but haven't really explored England yet !

Don't go Chinese...just don't do it. Poor engineering quality... As you mentioned before, get a good Honda.

Steven,

Don't be put off by the small bike thing. People have ridden round the world on 50cc bikes. In fact they have done it on push bikes so it can be done and your bike is certainly up to the mileage you mention.
Just "do it" and if you like it choose your next bike when you get back. You will have a bucket load of experience that you don't have now!!

BTW I rode a Chinese "AJS" 250 for some time before getting my big Kwaker and it was 100% reliable, just a bit slow. Did some long UK tours on it and it was fine.....they are not all bad. I suspect that a lot of the "big four" 's bikes (especially the under 250cc ones) are made in China. In fact Suzuki are quite open about their new 250 being made in China. I'm old enough to remember when all Jap bikes were considered crap!!
