Do you need to were hi vis on mod 1 and mod 2 tests if you are not with a school and use your own bike. In my case my 125cc bike.

You don't have to, but imho it gives you brownie points with the examiner, the same as wearing proper gear and having the right attitude.

Oh! I thought you were going to offer a 'test' of some different hi-vis!
I have a cunning and deviouse plot;

One regulation BLJ (Black Leather Jacket)
One Red & white multi-colour Leather Jacket
One Black & Yellow Textile Jacket, with integrated reflected seams
One Bright & Multi-Coloured Water-Proof Oversuit with integrated reflective panels

One Yellow/Green Sam-Brown Belt
One Yellow Hi-Vis Harness
One Regulation Yellow Hi-Vis Bib with wide silver reflective strips
One Orange Hi-Vis with narrow reflective stips. (to be sourced)

One Motorbike; with centre stand, that can be posed with a tailors dummy (to be sourced) desseed in the variouse motorcycle outfits individually and in combination for different photographs.

One car, with camera on tripod on the drivers seat & self timer for long exposures. To take Driver's eye view of motorcycle, with dressed dummy, in variouse states of attire.

One piece of road, with and without street-lighting, and convenient junction, in which the car and motorbike might be parked in EXACTLY the same reletive possitions for a veriety of pictures, in different conditions of,

Good clear day-light, on a sunny day
Overcast sunlight on a grim winter afternoon
Bright raking light on a sunny summers evening
Over cast and pissing it down on a typical britsh day!

With Day-light Running Lights
With Day-Time 'pilot' or side lights
With no lights

Night time, on unlit street
Night time on lit street
Night time on lit street in pissing rain
Night time on unlit street ion pissing rain

In beam of car headlamp
In shaddow of car headlamp's pool

But the permutatioons are rather bludy big, and I dont know where I could park a car and a dummy on a motorbike, safetly for possibly seven hundred photo's, at exposure times of potentially up to 3 minutes!

Could be interesting though.....

Yeah..... so NOT testing Hi-Vis, wearing Hi-Vis while on test.

Well... what do they cost?

Fiver?

Not mandatory, but, what the heck... first impressions and all that! Cant hurt can it.

I didn't wear one on my mod 1, but I bought one especially for mod 2. At the very least it shows you are serious about it.

Just edited the title for you mike, sorry to disappoint you Sad

Your ideas seem a great way to test out different hi vis / clothing combo's
would it make a difference if it was a sports bike or commuter bike as you have a more upright stance? on a commuter type bike so upper body more visible etc.
anyway getting off topic

I will be using hi vis on my tests, just wanted to know if you needed to. Wink

Dont know what the fuss is all about wearing HV, some people feel like they are dressed like Dwain Dibbley or something,

When you see someone else wearing HV you dont look at them and think what a twat do you, so they obviously dont do the same and if they do and you do,well thats your problem.

The only time I would think 'wanker' was if I saw someone on a large capacity cruiser wearing hi viz. The bad biker image but wifey won't let him out if he isn't wearing the hi viz.

My wife kicks me out, but I know she has upped my life insurance Shocked

To be specific - Dwayne would approve - the only time that you need[*] to wear fluorescent (or at night fluorescent or reflective) clothing is while under DAS instruction on a bike larger than 125cc or making more than 11kW.

You don't ever need to wear it on a "learner" bike, or during a DAS test - although you do need to display L plates during the test[*].

For the sake of a visit to the £1 shop though, come on. A token sop to the total sap with the clipboard.

[*] As a condition of validating your provisional license.

When both me and my wife took our tests (early last year and late this year respectively) we were passed a hi-vis by the examiner and expected to wear it.

Whilst it's not mandatory, it does create a good impression of your attitude to road safety. And you should seriously consider owning one as it gets darker in the evenings anyway Smile

Thanks for the reply's,
I was going to be wearing one on the test day just wanted to know if it was needed. I am all for keeping on the good side of examiner Wink

I do a lot of running and cycling on unlit country roads at silly times of the day so I already own an assortment of hi vis and reflective clothes and jackets etc, just need to remember to wear one on the day.
