First off hello bikers. I am sure you have heard this many times before so I apologise in advance.

I am doing my CBT soon and will be getting either a 50cc or 125cc scooter. My budget is £500-£600, so my first question is, can I get anything decent at this price?

Second question is, how can I best secure my bike at my house, I have no garage or shed. The back yard has walls that are above 6ft, there is a back ally behind the back yard.

Last question, is auto trader any good for scooters or should I go to a local dealer?

dont get a scooter, get a geared bike and get a 125. And you could probably get a decent CG or ybr for that price.
for securing it, get a disk lock, chain and a cover.

Hello and welcome. Smile

Definitely go for a 125. You have said your budget, but do you already have all the protective clothing you need and a helmet?

Search for Teflon-Mike on the Forum and read his stuff specially written for noobs. It's very informative.

Enjoy

Hi
can not help with prices,sorry.

When it comes to securing the bike you want a chain and padlock that you can at least put around the back wheel and some other part of the bike so it can not be pushed away easily. Ideally that chain should be attached to a large very heavy object or post that the chain cannot be lifted over.

you can also get disc locks that as the name says lock on the brake disc, but the bike has to have disc brakes for this to work.

A cover would be a good idea as well as keeping the rain/snow etc off it stops people seeing the bike.

Six hundred quid's on the low side really, either a rubbish new Chinese brand scooter or a fairly knackered old Jap machine. I'd look at spending £1000 - £1500 on a good used Japanese scooter. I started with a Yamaha Vity, £1900 brand new including RAC & insurance!

Forget 50cc mopeds, max speed 32mph and takes longer than a bicycle to get up there, whereas a 125 will hit a realistic 55-60mph with almost car-like acceleration.

Remember to budget for gear - helmet, jacket, overtrousers, gloves & boots. You can get away with just a helmet & gloves but the protection from proper bike gear is highly recommended, plus you're less likely to freeze in winter. Insurance often comes as a shocker, so I'd check it out pronto.

Lots of people here slag off scooters, but there's really nothing wrong with them as town runabouts, so if it's what you really want then go for it.

Security - chain it to something solid with the strongest chain & lock you can afford, and if you can keep it out of sight - and out of tiny thieving mind, then that's a bonus. This applies when your out & about as well, scooters are very easy to nick.

You can get a chain anchor that bolts to a wall or concrete path, here's mine bolted to a concrete fence post..

When I say 500 to 600 quid I do mean second hand, you got a link to that anchor? Also does it work in brick work? As we have a brick yard wall.

Ground anchors are a good option , especially if can be located somewhere that helps keep bike out of sight from passers by.

This is a cheap option, but there are many variations available.

For £500-600 you would get a pretty good Yamaha RXS100

They are reliable, cheap to run and pretty nippy. (75mph)

Here, it's top of the range gear, you can get cheaper ones almost as strong from Halfrauds, B&Q and suchlike.

Ah. It will start with a scooter, but then you get bitten by the bike bug..
