Hi all

Recently picked up a cb250n superdream (1980). Its running decently and i just got it through an MOT which is nice. I was reading the haynes (original 1980's copy) and it suggests oil changes every 1200 miles or six weeks (!). Im usually on the paranoid side about oil anyway but 6 weeks seems quite extreme does it not? Is there a general mechanical reason for this or is it just because oil quality wasnt so good back then?

It's cause they rev high for bikes of their day and don't hold a huge amount of oil.
Are you sure it doesn't just say that oil should be changed after the first 1200miles, rather than every 1200?
They do get through a fit bit of oil if thrashed so checking the level and topping up every week or two is essential.

Hi

Thought it was 1800 miles (from memory). Would think not so much for the oil, rather than that the reason to change it is to remove the rubbish it collects. The filter system on older bikes isn't so good.

Older Hondas had a bit of a reputation for the cams and heads becoming one piece units if you didn't change the oil regularly.

All the best

Keith

Yeah youre right....1800 (pretty good memory for an old guy Wink ). TBH its not the mileage that surprised me but the time interval. Im not likely to do anywhere near 1800 miles in 6 weeks on the SD. More like 400....max. So is still going to need changing after 6 weeks? Its not a big deal just interested in the rationale thats all.

It is short term memory that has gone. And a long time since I had a Superdream

To be honest I wouldn't worry too much about the time. Oil doesn't so much go off with time, although it does accumulate water if it doesn't get hot. Bigger problem is that combustion gases getting past the rings land up contaminating the oil with acids which can damage the engine. However although nothing to say either way I wouldn't worry about this over such a short time scale as 6 weeks from fresh oil.

All the best

Karma hi dude another wet dream!!

some pics would be good.

so, whats the colour of the oil?? and any debris on oil filter ( paper element type ) cover "floor"

see cmnsl for the exploded views etc.

was the thin washer in the oil filter chamber, tween spring and filter??

wet dreams have some family faults.............

how many miles and any fumes, smoke from breather hose ( on cam cover ) when cold or hot??

some pics would be nice.............

if its runnin nice and just passed an mot it should be relatively good, how much paid and how many miles??

consider flushin the sump out as clutch debris can and does cover the sump floor labarynth.........clutch drum acts as centrifugal crap trap ( as in most bikes ) so clean that as well. this will mean that clean oils stays clean for longer.

fit small vw type fuel filter tween tank and carbs, fit v neatly behind lhs cover tank grommet hole, flush tank also as "wells" and res "sump" collect crap, rust, water etc.........beware internal filter and dont try and undo the ht leads from the coil.

happy wet dreamin and dont expect too much from this old girl.

they go amazinly well with the wind behind you etc....... Very Happy
