I've seen most people on here blank out their numberplates when they post pictures of their bikes. I presume to stop cloners or is there another reason?

I've never actually bothered so am I being stupid/naive?

For some people it may be to stop them being linked to questionable activity.

Wheelie videos, etcetera.

No idea why people do it on new bike pics, not as if it's not visible by all and sundry when on the road!

Is there any way of finding out registered owner details via the number plate?

If so, it would go some way to preventing theft if you blocked it.

Some people like to masturbate over bike pics, knowing the number plate makes it too personal for most owners. Prostitutes generally use a false name when they work, same thing.

reason i do it is it is easy for people to find out if your bike is taxed tested insured online for free so they could cloan your plate and ride knowing that there uninsured illigal bike is gonna show up clean on police camaras no unexpected speeding tickets etc

I watched a episode of traffic copes once... the police officer on this episode managed to prosecute a motorcyclist for speeding, after watching one of his video's online... they did this by measuring the m/s he covered after a passing an object for example a lamppost... one of many reasons to hide your number plates Smile.

Surely he could have used a defence saying that he edited the video to speed it up to make it look like he was going faster than he was, to show off to his YouTube fans.

Although if he was overtaking cars that defence kind of loses plausibility.

Cars were doing 20mph that day so he decided to overtake. Wink

Not sure the numberplate would make any difference to that at all. Although might for any riding buddies shown in the video.

All the best

Numberplate didn't really make any difference.

What happened was a member of the public had reported him for his dangerous riding and the police gave him a visit. One of the first things he said to the police was:

"is this about the youtube video?" Razz

The police didn't know about a youtube video until he said. Bet he was kicking himself. Laughing

As for arguing that the numberplate is visible when out and about. I don't agree with that argument. Say I've just stolen a green ZX9, I would then have to drive around all day wasting petrol looking out in the off chance that I came across a ZX9 and also read its numberplate.

Far easier for the scum to just use google and find pictures where the plate is shown.

If I was an organised crim - you could just go to a local bike meet with a camera, jobs done you have every kind of bike and plate to copy or do whatever they do with them.

Err, because a 16 year old member of this forum took the number plate from an FZ750 that he found on the internet, put it on his Dad's FZ750 and rode around like that?

That is why I try to avoid it.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

Maybe it's much easier to find a varity of plates online rather than shopping the local bike meet for a similar bike. Otherwise you'll end up with a KTM plate on a van Laughing Laughing

I'm almost certain that member is a regular poster under a different name now.

One thing I've wondered is when I've been in auto parts shops and see others getting number plates made they have the vehicles log book with them? So how does one go about cloning a plate? I've never even ordered a new plate never mind a cloned one!

Do sites such as eBay etc require proof of vehicle ownership to order a plate?

No they don't. In fact any site I have used on the internet has never asked for any proof of ownership and I have had show plates made up for all my bikes.
