Would I be getting feedback from the drive chain? Tightened the chain yesterday and today I'm getting an odd feedback like it's trying to come off the sproket, like a tapping.

Not sure if it's just the chain being tight or the alignment being off.

Thanks

Hows your arms? Last time one of my wheels were off I felt it in one of my arms. A slight ache as you compensated for the rear wheel trying to turn the bike. Its ever so slight but after a ride you can feel a slight ache.

Also lift the back wheel up on a stand and hang weighted string from the subframe or pillion handles and spin the back wheel. You'll know by sight if its off slightly then.

I got exactly that when I tightened my chain and it had a stiff link. Couldn't get it to free up and could see it 'skipping' on the front sprocket. Had no history on the chain and sprocket so changed them out and now its as smooth as new Smile

I'll pay attention to my arms on the way back from work today.

Would it help to just turn the adjuster screws in the whole way then adjust them both out equally to get the rear straightened up? I feel feedback on the gear shifter, like a knock vibration every so often.

Are the chain adjuster markings that far out where it is possible to misalign the back wheel?

Someone I knew (I will not call him a friend) misaligned his back wheel badly enough that the bike would 'white-line' quite badly, the tyre was wearing quite noticeably and would drop into right handers but would be a struggle to go around left-handers - in his particular instance.

When tightening up the rear wheel nut, place a rag between the sprocket and the lower chain run and turn the back wheel until the rag jams the back wheel up.This will pull the adjusters tight while you torque up the spindle nut.

Whatever you do,do not bother with one of these

I bought one many moons ago and it is a waste of money. No matter how I used it,it always showed perfect alignment, even when I put the adjusters wildly out Evil or Very Mad

Get a tape measure...measure from the centre of the spindle to the rear of the swing arm, do this both sides and see if it is out of alignment, that is the most simple method.

Sounds like you've got some tight/shagged links if your getting vibrations like that. Id have a good look over the chain and see if you can spot any misaligned links.

Does it want to turn with no hands on a flat road?

When checking for correct alignment, I measure the length of visible thread on both adjusters.
If they're equal in length, the wheel is correctly aligned.
If they're not, then the wheel isn't aligned properly.

I've always done it this way and never had any problems.

The adjuster markings on some bikes can be misleading, so I go by the thread.

The adjuster marking plates I have seen thus far in my limited experience always seemed to have a bit of slack in them.

So far have used the tape measure on both sides between spindle & swingarm pivot.

A good telltale is if cornering feels "weird"... even if you can't define exactly how. That's been misalignment (in fact, in one case, the adjuster and axle nut going missing entirely Shocked ) as well as a crooked wheel (spoked) in my experience so far.
