Hi all,

Mate of mine brought a dog VFR750, the starter clutch has packed in, im going to go round tomorrow morning to give him a hand in replacing it, he has brought a replacement on ebay, also has a clutch cover gasket, oil/sump washer etc.

I have never changed a starter clutch before, is it similar to a clutch?, i.e drain oil/bike on side, clutch cover off, gently scrape old gasket off, and then unbolt the old one and rebolt the new?

He has a Haynes for it, but wondering if there was anything special to look out for.

Cheers

You will probably need a puller to remove the generator and the starter clutch will be in the back on most bikes.

Thanks for the reply Sickpup,

It was as easy as suspected, on his it sat adjacent to the clutch basket, just to the right.

Simply removed the 3 retaining timing pickup/generator bolts (technical term), three bolts on the face of the starter clutch housing (one of which was dangerously loose) out and the whole body came out, replaced like for like, and the timing was foolproof as there was a notch in the main splines. I checked his clutch plates while we were in there, which were fine.

The outer part of the starter clutch had cracked in about two places...

The most time consuming thing was scraping the old gasket off with bits of broken stanley knife and poor access to the engine side, we manged to leave the surface relatively un-scarred. Jobs a good'un Thumbs Up
