Right so i ve read alot about high beam, main beam, dipped and main lights. bit confused.

On my bike i got two, normal lights that come on when i turn ignition on, which are always on and the stronger light (that makes beam light shine on my dash) wich one do i use at night?

Sorry if i sound really stupid?

The lights that come on when you turn the ignition on are the ones you would normally use at night when there is other traffic about.

Main beam, operated by the toggle switch, should only be used when you would not dazzle other drivers/riders.

The blue light that you get on your dash is when you have main beam on.

If you're riding a 125 you'll learn very quickly that both are really crap with stock bulbs.

no im confused, your bike has always on headlight and rear light?

wierd.

you should have a switch with these two symbols

https://images.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/419929.jpg

thats dipped beam, low light, for use at night when theres oncoming traffic/people on the paths/foggy/light rainy/overcast or whenever a little extra light is needed.

this next one...

https://www.evilution.co.uk/smartengine/lights/enginelight3.jpg

thats your full beam, this is for, as an example, an unlit country road with no oncoming traffic. it spreads your beam much wider and a little higher than your dipped beam. this CAN AND WILL dazzle oncoming traffic and people/animals so turn it back to dipped when you see someone or something coming towards you.

this activates a blue light on your dash.

BOTH settings should activate your clock lights though.

All newer bikes have this, I think it's the same as cars having to have running lights on.

Hi thanks for the replies.

what i meant was that there no option to turn lights off, you choose the slanty line ones, which i now know is dipped or the main beam. only problem is dipped beam are SHITE in the dark, does not help me see fuck all, i.e road markings, lane markings etc.

Ive been riding in the dark with main beam on. not sure what to do now.

andy your right ive got ybr 125 and dipped re rubbish

you ride with main beam on, like you have been.... except when there's an oncoming car, then you put it to dipped beam. or there's a good chance the car will swerve into you and kill you because you blinded him with your main beam.

Make sure you change from main (blue light on dash) to dipped when ever you see a car coming towards you. Get used to changing so it becomes second nature. That way you won't blind car drivers and they won't stick their lights on full to tell you that. You will then be blinded.

There aren't many (any?) small bikes that have very good headlights. It's a sad fact of life that the electrical systems are not up to powering twin 65 watt halogen systems so you get the modern equivalent of a candle behind a lens.

You can try uprating the bulb if one is available or going for one of these blue/white ones. (I prefer them) but it is never going to be ideal.

Motorbike headlights suck for another reason. They're either attached to the frame (so don't turn when you steer) or the handlebars (in which case they turn a little), but either way, it's a problem when cornering at night. In the former case, the lights are pointing straight ahead, rather than at the corner. In the latter case, because you're banked over when cornering, the lights will be pointing somewhat towards the ground (to maintain a steady banked turn, you'll be steering slightly towards the inside of the turn).

Upshot is that you have less vision than you might do in a decent car at night, even with equivalent candles.

Given that a car has 2 x 55, and best you will get on a bike is 1 x 55 (using dip)
So you are looking @ 50% less.

Also car headlights dont turn when conering either.....

That's not quite true, some of the old citron cars have head lights that turn with the steering and alot of new cars have this on top spec models I think that even ford were advertizing this on tv recently but i may be mistaken.

reading another thread on here someone has upgraded to HID units. this may be an option for you

Yeah switch out the bulb to a car HID. Means you can use one kit ,and sell the second HID to a mate, saving you some pennies.

I can see quite far with mine, although if you really want a good headlight, those friggin bmw800 tourer things have a rectangle-ish headlight and they are savage! Really good at night.

But if you wanna keep stock, HID kit is the way forwards. Just make sure it has a low and a high beam, or you will be blinding people.

HID is only good if your lamp holders will accept it. Other than that it's a nightmare for other road users

Including someone going the same way as you as they probably won't appreciate being dazzled via their mirrors.

All the best

Oh yes, H4 HID. If your light doesnt accept these, then buy a cg125 headlight or a gs500 headlight or something so you can covert. Thumbs Up
