well i hope the weather holds out for monday cause i got my mod 1 round 3.

bloody second obs on the u turn has been playing on my mind since i failed round 2. every time i get a free thought BAMB its there!

been trying to keep busy. been painting the uss voyager model and applying decals as i finish up areas to keep my mind off it.

the problem is that now i've hit a wall with the model waiting for a new glue gun to turn up i have nothing to occupy my mind with.

my old glue gun died with a very loud bzzzz POP fizzle BANG and started smoking like burning toast. quite scary lol.

but yes, i guess its good its on my mind cause i wont forget it this time but god its fustrating having it pop into mind everytime i get a minute of spare brain fart power!

This video is ideal for getting the U-Turn nailed.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YHwd7cV3bm4&feature=plcp&list=PL10232AD630DFB5E1

The first ob is before you start to move off to do the turn, the second ob is before you actually turn, and if you keep your head in that second ob position, you'll come around like a dream with a ton of room to spare. Doing it this way, I had at least 2 feet of spare space on both my Mod 1 tests (on a 500c not a 125 BTW - impressive eh? Eh?).
Good luck, and don't forget your deep relaxing breaths before each manoevre!

Barring frost or worse, the weather is pretty much irrelevant for the Mod 1 test unless you're a bit heavy footed for the emergency stop or you decide to grab a handful of brake while swerving back in on the avoidance part.
The surface is super grippy. Wink

I didn't struggle with the U turn during practice or the test because I got into a little routine - lifesaver and move off then count using seconds, one, two (first lifesaver on the two count), three (turn head and turn the bike on the three count). Thumbs Up

It saved any dithering and wondering 'Have I gone too far, should I do another check', etc.
I know its bs and you won't do it this way in the real world but I ended up doing it like a robot! Laughing

Give it a go. Wink

Just treat the u-turn like you would on a busy road. You wouldn't turn without looking over your shoulder there so don't forget it on your mod1.

Best of luck for tomorrow....and whatever you do, don't use your rear brake for the emergency stop, there's no need and the worst that can happen is getting a minor for not stopping quick enough, which unless you've had a mare with other minors, shouldn't matter.

The amount of people i keep seeing failing mod1 for locking the back wheel on the emergency stop is crazy and so so needless.

It's the 1st October tomorrow - ensure you say 'white rabbits' three times as soon as you wake up and you've as good as passed Thumbs Up

Well it can't hurt!

Qb78: " got into a little routine - lifesaver and move off then count using seconds, one, two (first lifesaver on the two count), three (turn head and turn the bike on the three count)."

That's three obs surely its just two. Lifesaver.....move off.....lifesafer/begin turn.....hold lifesaver view while completing turn. ? I just need to know as i've not had any lessons so I'm not sure what all the robotic observation routines are and its the one thing on the tests I think I could fail on.

Best of luck! You can do it, try to relax - if it helps do a quick observation before the turn so you can check where the examiner is, you wouldn't want to miss him Wink

Got my Mod 1 - Round 2 on Monday aswell Sad
I hate Mod 1 but it's just a formality I've got to get through!
Just need to remember to stay in the middle on the cones approaching the swerve. Last time I went wide to make It less of a swerve and clipped the F'in cone on the way out.
Would of been a pass Evil or Very Mad

Don't sweat it.

There is loads of room. While your model paint is drying close your eyes and visualise yourself doing the turn perfectly. Hang on to THAT image.

Obs before moving-off. Move off and keep that right foot off the brake... 1... 2... shoulder check... back to forward-looking, head up and make the turn.

Do not look at or think-about the white lines, your peripheral doodah will handle that for you just keep your head-up. When the turn is done and your are back in neutral give yourself a smile. Smile

thanks for the kind words lads!

one thing i will say, i have to use the rear brake as my front ones a bit wierd.

it works slighty then the lever comes to a "jam" where it gets past it like theres a notch then the fronts engaged quite hard, so best i use the rear for now.

also, on my round 1 the SOB marked me as a fail for not stopping fast enough

Seriously, don't use the rear brake, just cover it. I did my Mod 1 in the wet, and has been said, the surface is super grippy. Don't tempt sods law by doing everything else spot on and then locking up your back wheel Wink All they want to see is good fork compression, the distance isn't set in stone.

This is something my instructor told me that they look for, which I'd forgotten until reading this. They absolutely want to see the front of the bike dip down on the E-Stop. I can't remember if I actually used any back brake on either of mine, but I'm guessing not much if at all. I did stall the bike after stopping though after forgetting to pull the clutch in time.
Good luck for Monday.

I think you've counted the last head turn as a lifesaver when its simply looking where you're going at the start of the turn.
I was taught to get a lifesaver in between moving off and turning the bike so in effect, there are three head turns in the entire procedure but only two are lifesavers.

I passed on my fourth attempt! Each fail was one stupid error - you'll nail it if you keep focused and not worry about what went wrong before Thumbs Up I passed my Mod 2 first time so all good!

Good luck!

thanks everyone.

im really not worried about it this time around. sure my minds yapping on about that second obs but i'll get there. my only REAL concern is the weather than that damned hazard. nearly crapped myself both times through it. still, i've done it twice without fail so this time it wont be as bad. (e stop was easier second time that first)

i'll report back in the afternoon how it went as i will be going to see the family afterwards.

So you've got into the habit of riding around without using your much more effective front brake, instead of just cleaning the calliper and piston or (worst case) spunking £30 on a new master cylinder? Doh!

I genuinely wish you good luck, but there is a reason that you may be asked "Show me how you'd test the front brake". It turns out that it's not a stupid question after all.
