I've umm-ed and ahh-ed about posting this. I've decided to do so because - much as it's come from a lot of sadness which is very much present for a lot of people - it's a lovely idea from an incredibly inspiring person.

I'm sure i'm not the only one that Kwaks has helped to be more mindful. After reading his threads which, whilst heartbreakingly sad, were incredibly thoughtful, i've started taking more pictures of Tiny Cornish and i together. Previously i had zillions of pictures of him, but none of us both because inevitably it'd be a cracking picture of him, but yet another picture of me that i hated. I've realised the importance of pics of us together goes beyond me ruining them and i've been ignoring it and photographing myself with him a lot more.

So how are any of you keeping things like this? At the moment i just have hundreds of pictures online and lots printed off at home. In light of what was said in Kwaks' thread (particularly by HK) there's little things like what we were doing at those times or random little stories about particular days that aren't being recorded. Little anecdotes end up being shared with my mates - usually on Facebook - cos he makes us all howl laughing at times, but they're of little use to him on there.

There are plenty of things - like the time he whipped his pants down and took a slash in the fountain to the horror of everyone enjoying their lunch in the park at the time - that are just stories with no pictures (thank fook! Shocked )

I worry about physical items. I'm not particularly au fait with online stuff but i thought a blog would be a good place as it's stored in the ethos and has no issues with anything happening to it the way physical items do. Is this the best way to store pics, videos and stories in a way that's also a record of all the little things that go with them? Is it safer to send lots of emails to an account i've set up for him, or would they be gone forever if it all went squiffy?

I want something i can keep adding to. Like today, we went to the beach and i got some nice pics of us, but currently they're just in a folder on my laptop. It'd be nice to put them somewhere with some stuff about them. What we were laughing at, things he said, that kind of stuff.

I don't have any photo's from my own childhood and it's something that i find sad, particularly when he's asked me to see some and been unhappy that he can't. I can't change that so it'd be wise to do the best i can with his.

In addition, if anything happened to me suddenly his life would be pretty complicated and something showing little snippets of our everyday life and things we've done together would be invaluable i think. Even if that's not the case it'll just be nice to make sure he has those things as an adult anyway.

My Dad has a good understanding of his family and (although he has no pictures of the years my brother and i were little) he has lots of old pictures, letters etc from previous generations. I've been taking prints and copies but he knows all the stories around them and i'm not recording them anywhere, which is what i'd like to do for Tiny Cornish.

So what are any of you doing? How are you storing little slices of everyday life and the all important words that go with all the pictures?

What a lovely thing to think about, it's nice that someones passing, as sad and hurtful time as it is, can also inspire others to do things in life they may not have done otherwise... personally I haven't got any kids yet so things like keeping a record of what they've got up to hasn't really crossed my mind, but I would like to think that I would come up with some super creative idea.

I take photos almost every single time I ever leave the house other than to go to work/shops/do boring things, I just can't help myself. Most of them end up on facebook, bit there's not much in the way of narrative to go with them. I did once buy myself a travel journal and started putting things in there from trips, like ticket stubs and postcards, but even that's feel behind now.

I like the idea of something physcial, a scrapbook or something like that. This reminded me of something I saw a while ago that a Dad did for his daughter:

https://healthland.time.com/2012/06/27/one-dads-ultimate-graduation-gift-took-13-years-to-make-what-have-you-got/

There is another story about a Dad who took pics of his little girl every day for ten years:

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1336528/YouTube-Natalie-time-lapse-Father-takes-daily-pictures-daughter-age-10.html

Perhaps you could make a daily/weekly photo project?!

Nothing, I have done nothing, and after Kwaks and what you are saying I'm going away to think about what I want to tell my kids, even though they are adults.

Maybe my grand children will remember me.

I really hope so.

Scrap book is an excellent idea, thank you. There are loads of things like receipts and tickets and little nic-nacs i've kept that are all mixed in with photos and stuff that can't be stored online. An actual scrapbook would be good. Otherwise they're just a collection of mad objects

I've been putting pics and things from my dad as i do them in a big photo album. I should probably farm out the narrative for that to him. He's retired now and needs something to keep him out of mischief Very Happy

I like the idea of online storage for pics though. I love those stories, thank you. That video is awesome. I think i could make one for him just of outfits he's worn (he's big on dressing up Laughing ).

Daily/weekly photo stuff is perfect, thank you. just something to catch all the little things that otherwise disappear under the big stuff.

My first child arrived 8 months ago today. It has been such an adventure full of sooo many great moments.

Currently have A LOT of photos and more importantly videos of his antics. It's been great looking back and seeing how he has grown and his own personality has developed. A lot of it is on a photobucket account.

This thread has reminded me I really should back it up.

Also the gf has a box where she has been keeping sentimental things like clothing, name band from hospital, first toys. etc etc

Last thing was done by his 15yr old sister. She has created him an e-mail account where she has been sending him e-mails. Some time in the future she will hand the account over to him so he can read all the e-mails.

I hadn't considered it really either until i read his threads. After the making memories one i felt there was so much more i could be doing. He really made me think and he's changed things for the better for Tiny Cornish.

After what Yaigi said about scrapbooks maybe collecting together pics and memories from the generations before you to pass on to them?

The more i think about that one the better i think it'd be to get my dad to do that for him.

You're so rushed off your feet when they're little you click away with the camera but then it just all sort of sits in an incoherrant blob. Vids of Tiny Cornish as a toddler make me giggle muchly and i'm so glad i took them. At the time we were moving around a lot and living in chaotic circumstances i was so pooped my brain wasn't really taking it all in.

The emails idea is fantastic. How do you back it up to prevent them all going down the pan in some horrible glitch?

I like the idea of sticking a few pics and a short write up into a little message and sending it off to a safe place for him at the end of a day or week.

Like you, reading Kwaks Memories thread, then reading his RIP thread has had me thinking a bit as well.

I've decided to revisit an idea I had a while back.

Basically, I'm going to open a Google account for each of my boys and print out the login details a few times for each of them to store in various safe places which would be expected to be safe in an emegency.

From there, every few days, I'll fire off an email to them talking about what they have been doing, as well as talking about those things you think about but never have the chance to follow through on.

Photos, videos, that sort of thing.

Google might seem a strange choice, but I can't see them folding unexpectedly and they have a history of being pretty good about allowing your data to be downloaded when you want to.

In the end, I'll give them the log in details when they turn 18. They may choose not to read everything immediately, but it will be there for them when they want it.

There are 2 main ways that I know of (perhaps others might know more??)

Online

By using something like photobucket, skydrive, dropbox etc or there are "backup" specific online sites for storing things online.

Hard Copy

What we have done is copy photos and videos onto DVD's. Gave 1 to my Dad and 1 to my sister. Asked them to keep it safe but also gives them to see all the photos and videos too. My family live about 150 miles away so don't get to see the "Wee Chunk" that often, so they are over the moon to watch as many videos as we can do.

Very thought provoking.

To be honest, i read about Kwaks passing, then i re-read his memories thread. Then i spent an extra half hour playing with my 19 month old son.

I know what you mean about the photos Cornish. I have hundreds of my kids, but only a handful of pics with me and the kids in. That is quite shocking really and its going to have to change.
If (god forbid) something happened to me suddenly they wouldn't have many photos of me to remember me by.

Its very very sad that Kwaks has passed away, but if we can learn stuff from it, and improve our own relationships with our kids, then thats at least a little bit of positivity from a frankly horrendous and heart breaking situation for Kwaks and his family.

That ad is pretty much where I stole the idea from.

Not many companies out there big enough that I can feel confident in storing this sort of thing with, but I think google is.

Fill your boots, I took the idea from a Google Chrome ad on the TV, which Flip just linked to above.

The beauty of setting up a Google account for them is the whole Google+ account which goes with it. Essentially, you can put those accounts into a special circle on their own, so you can drop all sorts of things into the account really easily.

Even better, you can download all the data on an account periodically and burn it to a DVD for storage.

Me too, thanks. I like your reasons for choosing google. I've been much more mindful of pictures of us both since first reading Kwaks threads, but it's the practicalities of what to do with them and how to keep them safe i've struggled with.

I agree beatnck2, every time i think about Kwaks and his family it really chokes me. I was looking out the window at lunchtime thinking about it and i noticed the sun was out. And that was it. Towels etc got shoved in the car, it's irrelevant that it's nearly october, it's warm(ish) so we're going to the beach. It was lovely.

Ironically i missed this completely cos Tiny Cornish has a bit of tv after tea and before bed to chill out before storytime etc. It's cbbc (no ads) and by the time he's gone to bed i can't wait to turn it off and usually only turn it on again later to watch Family Guy (no ads either) before i go to bed.

I should watch more tv Laughing

Yeah, open a Gmail account and log in to it. When you are logged in, have a look around - essentially, you want any of their services which offer online storage space.

Gmail gives you ten gigabytes I think, Google+ may or may not offer a couple more.

Once the account is made, keep the login details safe and start sending it emails.

I like the idea of having a dongle that you can keep with you and create and add stuff to when and how you want. Pictures, Videos, Word documents, etc, could all be added to it, and it could be nicely and neatly organised.

It'll give me a reason to buy an IronKey too. Always wanted one, but never had a reason for encrypted storage!

I had a Hotmail account which I didn't use for a few months.

When I went into it Hotmail had deleted all the emails in it because of lack of use!

If you're going to store important stuff online check there are no lurking nasties like that or you could regret it.

One of the things about the Gmail account is that they don't ever delete anything - its one of the main points of the service really.

The reason they don't delete anything is pure and simple so they can use their search algorithms on the content to tighten up the ad relevance and so on, but thats fine by me I think. Other people may not like the idea, but its their choice.

Understand about keeping the data safe though, worth keeping up some form of regular backup system to be sure it's kept safe.
