Posted: 22:00 - 01 Oct 2012 Post subject: After owning 40+ road bikes i decided to buy this |
 |
|
I was finding it more and more difficult to find new places to go and explore on a Saturday/Sunday afternoon as i had covered most of the roads within 2 hours of my house at least a dozen times so i decided to buy a bike that does not need roads.
I decided to buy a dirt bike knowing very little about them so i went for a 4 stroke (reliability in mind).
I wanted something with good build quality so i went for a Yamaha. I also wanted something light weight and manageable for a noob to offroading so i decided a 250cc was the best way to go.
I ended up with this.
https://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii302/ian505050/ian505050%202/IMAG0981.jpg
Its a Yamaha WR250 that i have spent the last month getting up and running and road legal. The bike had never been used on the road by the previous owner so i had to do a little research to pass the MOT. I found that a daylight MOT was the easiest, cheapest and fastest way to get the bike on the road, so went down that route.
To get the bike through the Daylight MOT it needed a number plate, reflector, horn, tyres marked 'MST' Multi Surface Tyre, headlight and rear lights taping up, any swithch gear for the lights had to be taped up too and obviously it had to be road worthy.
Once i MOT'd the bike i taxed it for £36 and insured it for £86. Bargain!
I was now like a kid at Christmas and could not wait to go green laning. I picked up my brothers gopro and mounted it to my helmet and off i went.
A little clip from an early ride that went wrong
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pPFWRJbABdE&list=UUbQ9gAFoMks7rdcewrozo5Q&index=3&feature=plcp.
I realized at this point that riding an offroad bike was a bit different to road bikes so i decided it to take it a bit easier for a while so that i did not die within the first week as i had spend a good few month working on the bike and to die on the first day riding it would have been a real waste.
I decided to take a few snaps each time i crashed or stopped on purpose.
Here is a snap from 1 stop i made
https://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii302/ian505050/ian505050%202/crash3_zps47a91b8e.jpg
I decided to try and get some shots going up this hill
https://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii302/ian505050/ian505050%202/hillphoto_zps0ffa3559.jpg
I then ended up on a footpath somehow and had to go across this little wooden bridge
https://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii302/ian505050/ian505050%202/bridge_zpse4f9ba01.jpg
The water was really deep either side
https://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii302/ian505050/ian505050%202/bridge2_zps2f3bbf5e.jpg
I then found that farmers love guys on dirt bikes putting on a show for the there sheep and cows
https://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii302/ian505050/ian505050%202/farmerjoe_zpsc4bb6379.jpg
I then found a Ford and tried to flood my engine but it survived
https://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii302/ian505050/ian505050%202/ford_zps76a7692d.jpg
https://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii302/ian505050/ian505050%202/intoodeep_zps0191ba7a.jpg
I then found some ace little tracks that were along side a lake, any loss in concentration and you go for a swim
https://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii302/ian505050/ian505050%202/lake_zpsbe0996f8.jpg
I the thought i would look a the noticeboard and see what was going on in the local community before i destroy all their beautiful landscape.
https://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii302/ian505050/ian505050%202/parish_zps113b525c.jpg
This is how you test the water depth, i saw it on long way round.
https://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii302/ian505050/ian505050%202/testingdepth_zps23b91a13.jpg
This is just before i crashed into a tree
https://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii302/ian505050/ian505050%202/tree_zpsda3b2911.jpg
This is how i recorded the footage. I think i need a different helmet for off roading TBF
https://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii302/ian505050/ian505050%202/IMAG0950.jpg
I mounted a sat nav wired to a lighter socket on the bike as it only has a small tank and i could not afford to get lost.
https://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii302/ian505050/ian505050%202/IMAG1008-1.jpg
I then thought this would make a good photo
https://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii302/ian505050/ian505050%202/IMAG1693.jpg
Then i got home to Bradford and found this
https://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii302/ian505050/ian505050%202/IMAG1683.jpg
Not quite sure how legal my plate mounting method is
https://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii302/ian505050/ian505050%202/IMAG1702.jpg
The bike really did handle some rough roads
https://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii302/ian505050/ian505050%202/IMAG0999-1.jpg
And even handled going up a few rivers
https://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii302/ian505050/ian505050%202/IMAG1000.jpg
and this Forrest
https://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii302/ian505050/ian505050%202/IMAG0985.jpg
But this Ford was just too big
https://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii302/ian505050/ian505050%202/IMAG1005-1.jpg
https://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii302/ian505050/ian505050%202/IMAG1002.jpg
I have now covered about 700 miles and the bike now needs, valve clearance check, new rear tyre ( off road tyres dont last long on tarmac), Oil change, filter change, probably a new chain and sprocket some time soon, air filter clean or replace and probably a lot more if i do everything the service manual says.
Been trying to embed some youtube footage for 20 mins...... How do you do it? Been trying with the one below

Cool little story
I'm curious, is anywhere free game to do this? I'm guessing you get pissed off people when you ruin their lovely countryside quietness? Is it all legal and stuff? ____________________ What would you do in life, if you knew you could not fail?

Just be courteous to people and you should be fine. And keep the noise down!
I'd love to do something like that, but lack of places to go combined with those types of bike being chav magnets keeps me away. Too bad really. |

This is why you get a 2 stroke for reliability when you're looking at competition dirt bikes .
For more, Redoko, see the proper section .
Oh and I'm in Keighley - unfortunately had my dirt bikes relieved of me last year - but if I ever get some spare cash, will be getting another/my big KTM fixed up and would be up for some dirty fun. Unlikely until next year, however .

I saw this and my first thought was "Dude someones knocked your house down." Then I realized it was Bradford and most of the houses look like that there.
On a side note. Cool pics though. ____________________ illuminateTHEmind wrote: I am just more evolved than most of you guys... this allows me to pick of things quickly which would have normally taken the common man years to master
