I took the LD Lines crossing from Portsmouth the Le Hvre and back again this week on my TransAlp and was pleasantly surprised that they have fitted wheel-chocks for the bikes. This sort of thing:

Ratchet tie-downs over the seat with special sand-bags to protect the seat and a rear-wheel chock.

Sports bikes have a rear-wheel strap rather than an over-seat tie-down.

None of the bikes moved an inch and last night's crossing was very, very lumpy.
