Hey there fella's and ladies,

I've been admiring you guys on the roads of London with envy for years and now going to jump in and go for my license.

I've been soaking up all I can find online from the many posts on CBT, direct access courses etc. But I have a quandary you might be able to throw some light on.

It appears as though all the training courses (at least at entry level, CBT) have you doing the pre-lim training on a lower power (and most troubling for me) a physically smaller machine. As man of a viking proportions and regularly asked if I play in the welsh front row, my question is. Can I ask to do my required basic training on a (physically) larger machine - or do I suck it up and look like a clown riding a monkey bike for those important first steps.

Thanks for any advice you may have and I look forward to joining your community.

Cheers All

Hi,

How old are you?

I could be wrong on this but I believe you can take your CBT on a 500 if your doing a DAS (which you have to be over 21 for). You'll get the best answer by phoning up a local training school because they'll know what they can and can't do for you.

To be honest, unless you weigh 30st a CG 125 would probably take you for the purpose of a CBT.

Hello. Yep, you'll be looking like a clown for your CBT Mr. Green

I'm not 100% but the idea is to not have the pupils die so this is likely correct!

Cheers for the quick replies fella's,

I was told everyone's tidy on here, holding true.

computid - No worries on that front. But at 6ft 4 and 19st I'm no lean Valentino Rossi and at ripe old age of 32 I should be well over those age restrictions to jump on a 500 off the bat.

And (Flatbadger / computid ) it must be common sense for those past their teenage years to kick off on a larger / safer bike.

Ta boys

there are many different sized 125s, the school i did my cbt at had one so big i couldn't touch the ground on it. so i think you'll be fine on a 125. it's only a day out of your DAS anyway

by contrast i can touch both feet flat with bent knees on my mates 750 machine.

whereabouts in wales are you bud?

Cheers Ocatoro,

I'll have to take a look at local training centres and see how big (as in seat height) the available training bikes are. You're right, its only a day CBT. Not so much vanity but being safe & competent - big boy on a chicken chaser might be a recipe for disaster ; )

As for Wales, long since left for the big lights and utterly crap public transport of London - but originally from the Bridgend area. Looking forward to soon taking a ride up over the Bulch.

Cheers

I'm 15 stone and my Honda 125 is fine - it's never going to break speed records but I can get to 60 no problem. If you're pootling around London you're not really going to have a speed issue. As for physical size, a Varadero is a big 125, surprisingly so.

Are you doing Direct Access or are you going to potter about for a while after your CBT?

Your of an age to do DAS. Good news is you'll feel more comfortable on the bigger bike. Bad news is a CBT will be done on a 125.

Shortarse lightweight! Twisted Evil I was 6"7 and about 21 stone when I was on a learner bike, it's so as bad as you think.

Don't expect to win any drag races though. Rolling Eyes

I'm not aware of any legal reason why a CBT has to be done on a 125. As long as you're complying with the "big bike" terms of your provisional while on road (which you will be during any legal and reasonable CBT course), you're fine. It is entirely up to the training school though, so get ringing around.

Maybe they could strap a 125 to each foot. Thinking

I am a physically big bloke (I DO play in the front row Wink )
Yes the smaller bike is a bit of a pain for the CBT and possibly 1st day or two, but at that stage you will just be more concerned with getting used to riding it.
When you get on the bigger bike you will find it much easier.
so yeah suck it up and get on the tiddler for the early stages, you can soon move on

^^LOL

Some schools do have bigger 125s for bigger learners. I drape my generous frame of general gorgeousness over a Honda Varadero 125. It's bigger than quite a few more powerful bikes.

If you've never ridden a bike before, you will have far too much on your mind to give a shit what you look like.

Enjoy. (You will).
