Mine are bloody shit. I was trying to enjoy the full experience of Muse this morning on the way to work and what I got was a tinny crap annoyance.

So I'm not looking for a stupid Sub that fills my boot, I'm just looking for a good replacement for the door speakers and some for the rear that gives me a rich tapestry of sound and picks up the subtleties that makes a song sound brilliant.

I have feckin no clue about these sorts of things but I'm told that a 4way is a good way to go. I'm sure a 3 way would be fun, but 4 way must be better, maybe even a 5 way but were getting into gang bang territory there.

I'm assuming I'll need to replace my old skool tape deck too?? Or will I be able to still rock my tape deck to ipod phone jack connection with new speakers?

Any advice would be apreciated.

Try changing the CD.

Ok try changing the tape then. It was a dig at Muse, who I actually quite like, but you left the door wide open.

Try closing the door - you'll get less ambient noise.

if you are changing speakers you dont need to change your stereo head unit, although you may as well get shot of the tape deck while you are at it! Wink

Alpine stuff is very good IMO

Alpine speakers in the van, Sony speakers in the car. Sony head units in both. I'm happy with both brands. You won't get amazing audio without spending a fortune I don't think.

do you just want some better speakers or do you actually want your stereo to sound good?

when i say that i dont mean some whacking install with unicorn spunk coated cabling.. just making a decent effort to get a nice sound out of it?

here's what i've done. doesnt cost the earth but did give me a lovely rich sound.

firstly, you need a decent stereo.. you'd be surprised how much better even crap speakers sound with decent power behind it. its up to you what you want.. im a pioneer fan, and went for an mp3 unit with inbuilt bluetooth hands free. (MVH8200BT) that i've got a 16gb sd card plugged into with most of my music on. plus the usual usb/aux inputs.

https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5187/5727514601_920f618b14_z.jpg

next.. if you want decent sound you need to sound deaden your doors as a minimum. so much sound quality is lost through vibration. i've done the doors and most of the floor in my car. doesnt take long and the effect is huge. you can use cheaper stuff than dynamat

https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5139/5728072632_61d17a3214_z.jpg

the speakers i've got are Pioneer TSE1796 17cm full range. i went with components last build i did but i couldnt be bothered with them this time and tbh im not an audio nerd so i dont notice the diff with a coaxial speaker

i've got Infinity 652i 17cm full range in the back just to round it out

and finally the icing on the cake.. Pioneer TSWX210A 20cm active sub sitting out of the way under my passenger seat Very Happy

https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5227/5804034145_8cdee23d5b_z.jpg
https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3491/5804576344_81dcc6f20c_z.jpg

provides such a rich sound. not too in your face (plus i can control it via the remote that sits in my centre console) but well.. 'just right' so happy with it. plus it uses bugger all space other than a bit of back seat leg room which isnt a prob as i dont often have more than 1 passenger in the car

im guesing this is probably overkill for what you want but thought id copy it down to give you some food for thought.

hope it helps

To be honest most of the stuff in halfrauds or your local friendly car audio specialists will do the trick, I wouldn't spend more than £50 a pair if it's just to bump the quality a bit. Very generally the older the car the easier to fit it all in yourself. Avoid bright colours so as not to attract the chavs. (honestly, bright green speakers showing through the rear window is inviting somebody to break into the car and steal the goodies, had it happen to a friend.)

If you don't want HUGE bass get 6x9's

If you want bass at its best get a SUB with a amp suitable for powering the the sub, make sure RMS is same as the sub if not lower.

Buy a decent head unit which puts out a fairly good wattage to other speakers, at least 40 RMS will be plenty good enough for some aftermarket Fli / kenwood component speakers, Bare in mind when you buy front component speakers they will need to be wired in using adapter plates & some may even need a connector wire for each side behind the door card.

That seems like a whole load of effort. Doesn't the kitchen foil get in the way?

I'm not looking to go to the level of effort that you have gone to. I just want some half decent sound.

Thanks everyone for tips.

changing speakers won't improve the sound from a crappy stereo
it could make it worse if the unit can't power the speakers correctly

I'm about to spend £160 to upgrade my van's crappy system with new head unit & speakers

the speakers come with a smallish sub bass (10") and 2 Alpine SXE-5725S - 5"x7"

Sony DSX-A50BT In-car radio & digital media player with Bluetooth, hands-free set-up and front USB input

6x9s are a false economy.. they try to do too much and just sound crap. you're better off just with coaxials. trying to mix bass + midrange and treble together just 'mushes' the sound

nah, door card clips over the top and job done.. its only like 2mm thick. just stops the panels vibrating/rattling ruining the sound.

if you just want a bit of an improvement get a new headunit and a pair of coaxial speakers. look up what size you need and get them. getting just one or the other wont make much difference at all, but personally if you were just to get one first id recommend getting the headunit over the speakers.

n.b. you may need to get an adapter or drill pilot holes in your door to fit new speaks.. you might also have to adapt the connectors depending on the car.

sometimes its just not that easy. my ctr's awful standard speakers mount in a way no other car on the planet does so i had to drill and mount an adapter (astra one actually) to get new speakers in

wont know until you look into it. try a car club for the car.. they'll have guides up id guess.

first off, you NEED a half decent amp and a good source. The source is where I see plenty of people fail. The amount of people that I see plugging in their iphone into the aux with 128kbps mp3 or AAC is ridiculous. 192kbps I find is acceptable. 256kbps and better is what I prefer.
As for the amp you don't need a separate box, a semi-decent head unit will put out 4x45W, which is reasonably loud. I've always prefered Kenwood and Pioneer. Alpine and Sony I find are overpriced as are JBL. I had some JBL's that were quite good as a second hand jobby. My dad's car had some nice sounding blaupunkt speakers, no idea on price though. I did put some hertz hi-energy components in my girlfriends mini a while back. Not that detailed, but they did have a real good punch to them, and that was without a head unit change.
would also agree about putting some sound deadening material in the car. Even putting a small amount around the speaker makes a huge difference.
