It just occurred to me that everyone seems to bitch about the UK these days. They have no pride and think the country's gone to pot, etc etc.

Well then, which place would you rather have cultural and historical ties to?

For me, I'm British through and through!

Maybe most of this forum are pretty proud too, but I'm just relaying what the papers seem to always say.

Been all over the world working from USA to Asia/Australia, Scandanavia to South Africa, enjoyed it all mostly. But I can honestly say I wouldn't live anywhere I have been over good old Blighty. You don't choose your country, your country chooses you.

I would always have kind of liked to be able to tell everyone I was from Italy.

I could almost get away with it, still having kept my married (Italian) surname for the sake of continuity for my daughter. But having been there, and seen what Italians can really be like ... I wouldn't probably bother. It is fairly cool having an Italian surname, though.

BUT ... (as I suspect most of the regular BCF population know very well) I'm fiercely proud of originally being from New Zealand.

The question isn't where you'd like to live, it's where you'd like to be from.

The problem is that where you're from affects your culture, upbringing, education, potentially even personality, so it turns into a bit of a trick question. Where would you like to be from, given who you are now; vs where you would like to be from, given what you would be if you were from there.

And I think ego-defence / self-justification / cognitive dissonance resists this kind of introspection. Because the person who judges us is ourselves; but the correct question is to think about the person we would be, in a different situation, judging themselves. And that takes quite a stretch of the imagination, not to mention insight into other cultures.

For example, maybe it feels really good to be a smug self-satisfied Frenchman. Even if we would not like to be French, maybe if we were French, we would be happier at being French, than how happy we are at who we are now. And if that truly is the case, then it would make sense to want to be from France, even if you don't like French people. (I am of course playing to stereotypes here, forgive me.)

So ultimately, I don't think I have enough information to answer this question truthfully.

Who gives a shit where someone is from? Judge people on their merit, not on the merit of people from history that happened to live in the same country or on a perceived national "type" that will not be applicable to all.
