Hay and straw wreck your arrows after a while, if they're aluminium. You need high-density foam, but not the stuff thats like a sponge. Think this is it -

I always used to just make a block 4-5 layers thick. No problem stopping the arrows and pretty easy to pull out again. This was years ago though so there may be something better out there now.

Thanks Zen, that's the kind of stuff I was looking for.... and not going to break the bank like everywhere else.
The problem with hay and straw (apart from ruining arrows eventually), is that they would just rot down would they not?
As for the wildlife... that I don't have a problem with... just that there is a very good chance they would run off with the arrows sticking out of them |

How big a back garden do you have that you can arch in it? Break a nock and you're off at 45 degrees on either side. Think of the kittens!
Self, I use rubber blunts, but that does kind of require Man Arrows. Marrows, if you like. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Thanks for the useful info... Ruck, every time I've looked on ebay they have been much more expensive than that, I might have to buy me a couple of them in the next week or two.
As for the rug, I was considering going to the local carpet shop and ask for some odds and ends and throw several layers together.
My bow is a laughable 34lbs, but for a first bow I didn't want to spend too much and go above my weight (scrawny runt that I am), I did have a couple of cusions from a leather sofa which at point blank range and still managed maybe an inch penetration, even tried on my current sofa (after a drink or two of course), again point blank range and managed maybe 2 inches.
Roger, my wifes garden has a small lane up the side of the house which is about 10 yards, then 15-20 yards downhill on to the back wall of the garage, then the garage itself. there is a 6 foot fence on one side and the other side is probably about 10 yards away. I'm not the best archer in the world, and I did have a couple of panels I made for other reasons on top of the garage, but from about 35 yards I never missed a shot when using a sofa cusion.
Back garden at the flat is a lot smaller, and for target practice I've used 2 pint (plastic) milk cartons and even though I don't always hit them, I'm always within a couple of inches, in this back garden I've had something like 2 stray arrows which have hit the ground at a strange angle and slid along the ground about 4-5 feet past the target. |
