This kart has a jet turbine engine Shocked . It's got to be a GixxerKart killer.

Who ever thought of putting a jet turbine engine in a Kart Sick .

it looks like the turbine is actually driving the wheels or why did it wheelie

sounded like it blew up at the end as well Twisted Evil

Its a jet turbine, it must be driving the wheels. If it wasn't they'd just call it a jet! Laughing

err no actually

a jet is a turbine only it uses the hot gases produced accelerated through a nozzle to produce a reaction like a rocket

the turbine itself is just the bit that imparts a rotary motion to a shaft to drive the compressor (only in a jet) or another piece of equipment - wheels in this case

the whole thing is called a gas turbine whatever

trust me - I have been working with them for the best part of 20 years

the trouble with small gas turbines is that (like turbochargers) in order to get the compressor to work efficiently they have to spin at a ludicrous speed - at that size it's probably over 100,000 rpm (no typo) - that being the case it is difficult, read impossible to reliably gear it down and still produce enough torque to actually get anything off the line. Also they only tend to operate at two speeds, fast and amazingly fast so you can't really modulate speed with a conventional throttle like a reciprocating engine and have to have another way of controlling the amount of torque/power transferred to the wheels

it was difficult to see but that one looked like it was installed backwards and the rotating piece you could see was actually the compressor inlet - although it could equally be the turbine outlet, hard to tell

generally anyway if it was and you can see the turbine outlet like that then there is no nozzle, no acceleration of hot gas and no jet effect

judging by the clouds of white smoke, it also wasn't burning very well, at a guess runnning on diesel

it looked like a converted turbocharger

neat idea all the same Cool Cool

Yes Mr C it is a gas turbine a hydrogen peroxide turbine to be precise Razz . In the second run it was the actual tires that blew Shocked and the wheels are spinning at 7K RPM which is insane.

sounds wrong to me

Hydrogen peroxide is rocket fuel, you can't run a turbine on it

it doesn't need oxygen to burn as it carries its own and burns way too hot for a metal turbine to survive in it

more likely diesel

Its a gas turbine running on kerosine diesel mix, I saw one like it at santa pod about a year ago.

thanks kev that makes more sense

Kerosene is what all aircraft jet engines run on - paraffin

We run ground based turbines on diesel as a secondary fuel, natural gas as primary fuel - usually
