Havent passed my test yet but will be having my bike delivered towards the end of this week.

The bike will be at my home address either in the shed or covered in the back garden.

How do i go about insuring the bike without a licence as obviously I dont want to leave the bike uninsured and it get nicked!

It's probably going to be around a month before i pass my test so its not like its going to be a couple days either.

Has anyone done this before?

Ring a specialist like adrian flux, they will be able to help or direct you to someone who can.

+1 helpful, but "6 month and 12 month policies are available"

For 1 month, I'd spend whatever an insurer planned to gouge out of me on security instead. Better not having it nicked in the first place than claiming on a bike I'd never ridden.

Either way, unless it's got third party cover, it'll want SORNing. Although you'll can't even do that until you get the V5C in your name, and will almost certainly get away with it for a month.

If you're thinking of insuring it with your provisional license, good luck with that. Some insurers will do it, but I don't know who and would assume that you're going to get stitched up.

You could - and I'm not saying you should - go with an insurer who doesn't require seeing your license (e.g. Swinton) and insure it with the license that you expect to get. ZOMG insurance fraud, but if you're not going to be riding it (and thus having a claim on the road) until you have that license, it shouldn't become a real issue. Bonus is that you won't get raped with admin fees when you do get the license.

But for the sake of all that hassle... just SORN and Almax it.

I'm assuming you have bought it from a dealer? If so you could just ask them to hold onto it for another month for you.

How do you see that playing out?

Arrow Sure, no problem. We're happy to keep it here on our insurance and at our risk despite the clouded issue of ownership and insurable interest, on the tiny offchance we'll get some more hassle from you years down the line. Blowjob while you're here?
Arrow Sure, no problem. Our storage fees are quite reasonable, compared to being raped by a rabid grizzly.
Arrow Sure, no problem. [leaves it on show, sells it to the first punter who offers to ride it away, shrugs when asked where "your" bike is]

Pro-tip: if you don't get answers 1 or 2, you've been given answer 3.

I would like to think someone I was buying a bike from would be more reasonable/honest than that. If I didn't have faith in them, I surely wouldn't buy in the first place, but that said I can see your point.

He could keep it in his own garage if he has one. That won't solve the problem of it being nicked.

And if it is stored at another address it has to remain there until the policy renews or until a change of detail is sought which may cost £30.

Phoning a broker or insurer is the right answer here.

Having seen businesses going under from the inside, I may be a touch paranoid on this. But morality quickly becomes flexible when the debt collector is trying to smash your back doors in.

Apocryphal tales of which I have heard tell:

Arrow 'Accidentally' selling the same bike twice then dragging their feet over refunding the money to keep it in their account for as long as possible.
Arrow Selling bikes on behalf of owners for a commission, pocketing the whole amount, and doing the Spreadsheet Shuffle to again delay paying the owner.
Arrow Taking in bikes to do work on them and actually selling them on. Shocked
Arrow And when they finally do go under, god help you if you try to get your money or your bike, because the administrators won't.

Sure, no ethical dealer who intended to stay in business would do any of that, but when it comes down to keeping enough money in the bank to pay the staff this month, it gets easy to justify it.

The joy of operating as a limited liability company is that behaviour that would be treated as common theft if done by a scrote on the street is brushed off as a civil matter when it's done by someone who's VAT registered.

Those weren't all fly-by-nights either, George White left a number of people badly out of pocket when they went under.

tl;dr version, I hand over money for vehicles in exchange for the keys. That way there can't be any little 'misunderstandings'.
