Has anyone heard of these?

Was browsing the net and came across them by chance.

A New Zealand based company making 57kg motorbikes with a 125cc low maintenance 4 stroke engine.

Looks like they could be fun!

Well spotted.

Still want one though Laughing

Components look good quality and if you look through the videos they have got the thumbs up from some quite decent riders.

No, no no.

No.

It's a really nice concept - I would say that because I had similar ideas.

The execution is horrible, however.

You can get a KTM 105 SX which is a big-enugh-for-adults dirt bike that has got massively better performance and strength for 68kg or so.

I'd want a lot more than 11kg off for the spindly wheels, frame, brakes etc.

The KTM 85 small wheel edition is listed at 66kg.
Go a bit smaller to a 'kids bike' and the 65SX is listed at 55.4kg and is probably a better performing bike in everyway bar the size to the FX.

Me, I'd have gone for a minimoto engine; which can make up to 13hp or so, yet total weight should be a chunk under 15kg on top of a mountain bike.
These days I'd just go electric and make up some easy-swap batteries.

Ok, i'll add - put 25 bhp 2 Stroke in - not sure of difference in engine weight - but that would then be - FUN! Cool

I would just be concerned about the mountain bike brakes and front forks, would they be up to the job?

Otherwise it's pretty cool

Already done.
https://images.gizmag.com/hero/8431_301107124627.jpg

Also listed at 57kg. KX85 the engine came from listed at 65kg.
So again, they've rebuilt an entire bike with considerably inferior components not designed for the purpose to save 8kg.

If they end up with something closer to a mountain bike weight than motorbike, it makes sense - when it's only just below a much tougher original bike, I don't see the point.
Frankly, you could probably just stick push bike wheels/tyres/brakes on the stock motorbike and be most of the way there!

I suppose the issue here, is getting people to realise that there are already very lightweight, punchy little bikes out there, like the small KTMs that G mentioned. Does look giood fun though.

Just a point of interest, are those cable operated discs? I don't see a res by the levers.

Good idea to make money though. Looks to me as if they will sell loads to people thinking their the next big thing.
I wouldnt trust one. It just looked like a beefed up mountain bike with an engine. Those brakes look like they couldnt stop anything either.

seriously disappointed in the ignorance im seeing in this thread .

its a basically a motorized DH MTB i cant speak for the frame as thats their own design but look at the components ...

Marzocchi Monster Ts ...strong as fuck but expensive mine took 3 years of abuse from a 15 stone rider at up too 50 mph on some of the roughest off road tracks before i sold my DH /freeride rig
Also i would happily bet money on them being better than the KTM ones lmao

Fox Racing Shox Float MXR ....its a fox nuff said

RK excel rims ....most the major crosser seem too have them anyway or re-branded ones so i really dont see these failing

from what i have read the brakes are defo good enough for that weight being 250CC motocross ones lol

lol i can remember my mates trying too mock my rig as it had "thin" forks compared to their heavy old fox 40s ....mine "just"monsters BUT were made from stronger materials .......

thinner lighter but just as strong ment i was faster few months later everyone switched too the monsters

The Fxbikes i have looked in too are all like that ......using higher quality parts where possible too shave weight off .

Personally if i had the money i would have one over a ktm anyday lol take 30 seconds too search KTM snapped ......a LOT of them seem to have weak frames for a "premium" brand

So you think this could survive what it takes to snap a KTM?

A lot of people will buy a KTM and race it 'out of the box' in pretty high level motorsport?

Or are you talking KTM push bike components, rather than those made specifically for motorbikes, their original market?

They use different brakes in different pictures.
Inthis picture it uses a motorbike brake caliper which what I would guess is a much thinner rotor. Others it seems to be mountain bike, such as the original picture.

Oh and this is around the weight of a light pit bike too I believe, but you'd be expecting more power from the pit bike.

It's cool. But it's essentially a stripped down dirtbike with a 7-10bhp 125 chinese pitbike engine.

And look at the lean angle of the engine! They were never meant to be leaned like that.

So not worth more than about £800 in my eyes.

Laughing

What a load of pish!

You'd be better off buying a second hand trials bike, plenty of 'em about, for less than half the price, an old TY would piss all over that!

Comedy bike, for posers with too much money!
