Have a look on lidsdirect.co.uk for ideas. e.g. click here for £0-£100, mainly HJC.
Can occasionally get bargains for last seasons or discontinued models, J&S are good at that sort of thing but you need to ask. May have problems getting replacement visor but you'll have probably worn out the helmet before the visor.

Whilst I agree to an extent about the 'get what you pay for' mantra I do believe there are some reasonable prices helmets out there that aren't too bad.
My brother has this:https://www.jsaccessories.co.uk/box-bx-2r-batman-helmet-in-matt-black-3836.html £40, and to be honest, I'm quite impressed. Its really well made for the price, visor seals pretty well, has a little chin curtain to reduce wind noise. It is certainly heavier than a pricier helmet, but not by a massive amount. I'm afraid I can't attest to how loud it is, my brother is happy with it, although its his first helmet and he is on a 125 - no sustained motorway riding. |

Exactly my point, the Box helmets are great. To get the amazing comfort you get from an Arai you have to spend an extra £200.
But, if you spend an extra £100 - you don't get that comfort, so its not worth it. You either get an Arai/Shoei - or you get a cheap lid. Simples.
I've had several lids in the past few years, Box, HJC, Caberg e.t.c. nothing compares to my Arai. The box was £40, the HJC was £80 and the Caberg was £150. They were all on par, even with such price differences. My friend Edgey who has a HJC (£80) and an AGV (£160ish) prefers the HJC as its comfier.
This is my point, you either get a cheap lid which don't really differ between brands and price points, or you get a premium Arai/Shoei (or Schuberth if you want a flip front). |

I'm amazed this thread has gone this long, before all the 'paying big bucks for a helmet is just throwing money at the R&D/marketing budget' merchants.
Truth is, you are right, you are paying for a certain amount of marketing hype, but you do also get proper quality.
One of my work colleagues has just bought a cheapo flip front; paint finish is good, overall design is good, features are good, but you can tell immediately, this isn't going to last.
The mechanism that operates the flip down sunvisor takes a fair bit of force to operate, but feels a bit flimsy, so it's going to break.
Same with the air vents, visor and chin bar, they all take more operational effort that I would like, but the mechanisms don't feel up to the job, long term.
On top of that, it fits OK, but the lining feels like it's made of bricks, so it's not going to be comfortable on anything more than a light commute.
I was looking at lids during the recent Hein Gericke closing down sale, and helmets that normally retailed at £100 more than my colleague bought, were not worth the extra.
In my view, £1-200 is no man's land; either buy very cheap and expect to replace often, or spend decent money on a top brand.

HJC CS-14 at £90 wasnt bad. Fogging was an issue, as was weight. After my accident i ditched it in favour of an AGV K3 Basic (vente uno?) at £110. Found it to be noisier than the HJC, better ventilated, lighter & rarely fogs. 4* SHARP too.
Think next time i'll be going shoei and spending out though. SWMBO swears by hers, says zero fogging & its very quiet.

Most people dont like the idea of used. The shark is pretty much new, not even one scratch and inner foam is good. In a week, it will be scratched to fuckery, because Im going to be using it as intended.
However plenty of shark S500's on there new for about the same price.
havent recived the AGV yet, but I will be checking its ok. Either way its better than my old, so will be used. |

As already said, look for end of range bargains for normally decent ~£200 helmets.
My first ever 'bash hat' was a £60 Bieffe and it was a noisy, steamy piece of crap. I thought that all helmets were like that until I replaced it with a brand new (at the time) discontinued Shoei XR800. The fit and finish was amazing, and best of all it was plush and quiet and didn't weigh 12 tonnes.
Was £199, down to £100 IIRC, back in 2001 though..
