One of those questions that I'm sure get asked a lot.

I'm directing this to new riders, like me, who passed mod2 recently and the examiner sent their license off to be updated with the new entitlement.

The question is, how long did it take you to receive your license back through the post?
I'd like to see what sort of average timescale will come out of your answers.

As for me, today is one week and still no license... Sad

It's generally less than 2 weeks, but it does depend on how lazy/busy they are. I think the official time is 4 weeks.

The examiner sent mine off when I passed my mod2 and I received the new licence exactly a week later.

you don't have to wait for your licence to come back. The coppers can click it on their computer and see. It's handy to have your pass certificates at hand (at home) if the rozzers wanna see 'em though

Mine took 4 weeks but that was mainly due to the fact they wanted to renew my photo at the same time.

They didn't ignore the £20 fee either

Thank you all, very useful replies.

2 and a half years ago when I passed my driving test, I passed on a Tuesday, and by Friday the same week I had my full license back in the post.

From your replies I can see it might be taking longer now, on average, so I'll wait and see.

My new bike *should* be ready for me to pick up by Tuesday next week, and being the impatient git I am, I don't want to receive the call that the bike is ready to pick up and not have a license (they need to see my license to let me have it even though they let me test ride it based on the pass certificate alone) Bounce!

Out of interest, anyone been pulled very shortly after passing Mod2?
Such as, same day or the next morning, before your old liscence has had time to wing it's way to the DVLA and thus, no police computer update.
Just wondering what the drill is in that eventuality/thinking out loud

If you're riding without L plates or have hopped on a bigger bike, then it would be reasonable for a copper to assume that you're not licensed to do so unless he can see some evidence to the contrary.

If it's not on DVLA's system yet, and you're not carrying your pass certificate, that's Seize City.

Given the DVLA's track record on losing bike entitlement, and the DSA's apparent "once you're out of the door, you're on your own" attitude, you'll want to treat that certificate as though it's an ass pass for Mila Kunis.

Take a photograph of the pass certificate and keep it on your phone and make sure the certificate number is readable.

If you are planning on test riding a bike during the period I have found that the dealers I spoke to were happy provided you took the original with you and a photo ID (passport).

Passed on a Friday, let examiner send license away & had it back the following Friday, so just a week.

Very sound advice about keeping a photo of the pass certificate on your mobile!

Also, just to say I test rode the ER6 I bought using just the pass certificate, the dealer was kind enough to let me have it without photo ID (after paying their huge insurance excess and leaving my own bike keys with them, of course).

Here's my own contribution to the statistics, finally! Same as cimbian, passed Tuesday last week, received license back today, so a week and a day or 5 working days. Very good compared with the stated 3 week maximum Very Happy

Why does a shop need to see your licence before they let you have the bike? It's none of their business whether you've got a licence or not, surely. If you've paid for it, it's yourproperty and they can't deprive you of it.
