did an insurance quote under the factual details but assuming i passed my module 2 and got my "full lisence" today.

honda CB500 sports 93-2001 model

0 NCB

£200 TPFT full years cover. legal assistance and no other "benefits"

sound about right? thats also paid monthly so that includes the "we're raping you for more money because your paying monthly even though it costs us fuck all and is fully automated" fees lol

or £250 with legal assistance, breakdown, helmet and leathers, personal protection.

both with a £400 excess and bike valued at £1000

24 years old.

had the provi since i was 16. although i dont know if that makes any difference to the price.

im thinking i quite like the CB500 sports and that it might make a nice first big bike. so doing the quotes to make sure monthly payments wouldnt be any issue and i dont do a shereen.

now i just need to check the general cost of the bike second hand lol.

Ermmm.... how did you come to that conclusion?

If you don't pay in full, a financing company pays it for you, and then you pay the finance company back over 10-12 months.

So, some finance company should do all that for you for free?

No.

it's not great fella, but depends on your age and location. i just did a quote for same bike and same circumstances "just passed".

comes back cheapest from bennetts at £78.41. or £15.79 and 10 lots of £7.14. also 3pf&t and only £150 total excess.

well to be fair, as im sure hahadumball, paddy and a few others will agree, you dont really want to leave you bike in thanet with no security (i put 0 security on bike like chains, alarms ect, but kept in a locked garage, my back yard) for very long because it wont stay put for to long lol

So essentially Third Party then? You are taking the theft risk on almost half the bikes value..... come claim time, even if they dont argue the value down, most you'll get is £600, which they will likely try getting back, in your next couple of policy loadings.....

Don't sound TOO bad a price, but, I'd want a lower excess.... as in under £250 compulsory and voluntary.

No point paying for insurance if you end up paying for a pay-out against it as well!

It shouldn't, since you should be putting down "0 years" as your license duration.

Be sure that you're answering the question that they're asking. Up to now, you've been putting down "provisional license" which really means provisional A entitlement, it's not a license per se.

The moment you pass your mod 2, you have a license but are knocked back to 0 years again. Sucks, but that's how it works. Some people might have been getting away with counting their provisional duration, but that's all it is - getting away with it.

In future, you (and I) have to be very careful to read whether we're being asked when we passed our tests, or how long we've had "a" license, or how long we've had our current category, i.e. the "From" date on the license, which gets reset when we go from A<=25kW to A (or in the future A2 -> A).

Ombudsman agrees.

On that value of bike I'd agree that the excess is either too high or too low. Minimise it or maximise it (and under-value the bike and treat it as a TPO policy). Try TPO and Fully Comp as well, you might get lucky.

Also, I'd forget about any legal cover. If you have a valid claim against someone else, then any ambulance chaser will take your case. If there's a claim against you, your insurer will fight it, since it's in their interest to do so. What other "assistance" are you paying for?

Personally, given what I pay for a CG125, at 30 years old, 3 n a bit years riding, 12+ years driving, clean license (or it was at the time :-/ ) and as much NCD as I can possibly get...

You've done well there. Double check the excesses, restrictions and exceptions don't take the piss, and get on.

You have of course done the whole checking price comparison engines against each other and the independents, then calling up the winner with the web reference number thing yes?

£200 for any vehicle in Thanet sounds like a bargain to me Thumbs Up

Have you fiddled around with quotes putting beefy security on to see if that brings down the quote at all?

Quite interested in how much people paid to amend the policy mid term after passing.
Hoping to get a SV650 when I pass and call up my insurance to amended my current policy. Hoping it wont cost too much seeing estimate quotes make it cheaper on a new policy than my original 125 policy is now Neutral

You will probably find like me that your current insurance company won't insure you for a 650cc. Mine tried to charge me £50 to cancel my policy for my 125, but after much arguing and a bit of politeness over the phone they eventually refunded my whole £58 I paid for my policy Very Happy ( I had used almost 3 months of it up )

Yea that's the route I may have to take Thumbs Down
Cancel the policy and get refunded minus the admin fee, then take out a new policy.
Lose my 4/5 month ncb ... the horror Mr. Green

You haven't got 30 minutes to an hour to spend checking what the websites will actually quote you, yet you can come on here asking about it in a thread spreading over 36 hours so far? Erm. Laughing

https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/insurance/cheap-motorbike-scooter-insurance

^ follow that guide in fullness and see if it helps you any. Be wary of the absolute cheapest quotes as often the companies - and more importantly the cover - is/are very basic, has insane excess and a bunch of exclusions, poor payout caps for 3rd party and serious injuries etc... or with terrible customer service records.

(EG Having seen the pasting they get by dissatisfied riders and drivers, I will never personally touch anything involved with eSure... which also includes Sheila's Wheels and a few other shell companies... they're usually easy to spot as the prices are all the same except by a certain, fixed amount depending on your status (such as, if you're a bloke, Sheila's Wheels is always £10 more expensive than eSure for the same policy, and vice-versa for women). Swiftcover also gets the swerve.)

Find one that looks at least halfway reputable, put all the details in as accurately as you can, check that all their "assumptions" are correct (some of them will put wacky figures for your mileage & so forth, if they don't ask you to specify it upfront), then play with the settings to see what better security & the like could save you, and how much the useful add-ons are.

(I will personally never do without Legal Cover again after the sheer amount of cocking about with solicitors that was required after a disputed accident where someone ran into me but claimed it was the other way around, and there were no witnesses or cameras. More than a year later and what would have been £thousands in legal bills, I came out of it with a clean insurance record, retained NCD, the third party's insurer covering my payout and theirs - and therefore much lower premiums the next year. I may well have been able to represent myself, but nowhere near as professionally and effectively, and would have had to take many days off work to do so... £20 a year? Worth it.)

After that take the quote number, give them a ring, and see if the phone jockeys can't get you down closer to what the super-cheap bunch were offering.
