The story so far - daughter mangled her Vespa ET4 frame in an accident. DOH!!!
Found similar bike for spares on ebay - stolen recovered.. Hmmm...
DVLA told me over phone it would be no problem to change the frame and amend VIN number on V5 - I believed her and went ahead. I suspect I'm the idiot here Embarassed

DVLA now tell me after an inspection that it can only be registered as Q reg.

What impact will this have on the value of the vespa (which I think would have been about £600-700), and what other issues might potential buyer have with it - insurance? etc.

Has anybody got any experience of buying or selling a Q reg which is otherwise a standard model with original parts albeit from 2 bikes?

Thanks

This is why most people just put the engine from the crashed bike into the new frame and tell the DVLA that you've changed the engine and update the engine number on the V5.

Yes, having a Q Plate will negatively affect resale value. Wether or not it affects the insurance price depends on the insurer, but some just won't cover Q plates at all which obviously affects the range of insurers that you have to choose from.

And yes, I agree with Tom, pics of daughter are required. Thumbs Up

Laughing Laughing Laughing

If she isn't planning on selling it i cant see a problem.

A q plate might put some buyers off. Keep details such as recipts of any work done as proof for buyers.

From experience of my Dad doing similar things with cars, selling it will be a problem on a Q reg, as has already been said, people assume the worst. You have no guarantee the work has been done well either. The only time he's seen something worthy of being put on a Q reg has been when the car in question is a particularly nice car that would be a "shame" to lose, and he's planning on keeping it for himself. When he has come to get rid, he's popped it through the auctions and suffered the loss, with the plus point of having had a nice car for a bit.

There is a problem and I'm surprised no one has mentioned it.

Hardly any insurer will touch it as a Q plate, and you'll probably have a 3-500% loading on the cost of a policy. Q plates rarely put buyers off, until they get an insurance quote.

as above regards insurance but a Q also has a plus in that....

Q’ plate registration is issued if the machine is of ’indeterminate age’. For MOT Testing purposes assume the machine to have been first used on Ist January 1971.

a plus if you happen to like slightly noisy pipes, black number plates, no indicators etc etc Thumbs Up

Can you not just apply for a V5 for the stolen bike, using it's VIN and index, then claim that to have been rebuilt?

My Thunderace is on a Q-plate because we swapped the frame over, and fell into the same trap of updating the frame number on the v5 thinking all would be fine.

The problem with this is insurance price. It went up by 40% in my case when the Q-plate was issued.

My first bike (a KMX125) was a stolen/recovered Q plate. I paid £750 for it at a time/place where the going rate for a decent one was about £1000-1200. Totally standard apart from a DEP exhaust Cool . I reckon the insurance was about 20-30% higher, same as Mr. Benedict.

Selling it after 2 years, i got about £670 i think, so a lot less than a non-Q plate, but comparable to what i'd paid.

Aside from a bit extra on the insurance, i didn't really find any downsides to having a Q-plate, and i'd probably get one again in the right circumstances.
