I've been sat in a Mercedes dealer waiting for the smart to be serviced. Very nice places, free coffee and wifi, a proper friendly but not pushy sales staff and I've just been out for a test ride in a 280 slk.

'twas unfortunately underwhelming, nice pick up from 0, but felt all sluggish the rest of the time - not what you expect from nearly 3l of German engineering.

I'm pretty sure they take their time servicing just so you look at all the cars.

It is all part of the façade, they bring it back out in 30 mins and Mr Wibbly says what have you done for my £250 service?

Take 90 mins and they are happy to be kept longer as it's had a proper full service despite it having sat on a ramp for an hour with the oil draining.

When I did AA/RAC work and doing a keys locked in car or lost keys job we were told that we had to put on a show and take our time breaking into late model expensive motors as not to cause the manufacturer grief by popping the doors open in 15 seconds.

There was an inspection window - kept having a look to make sure they were doing stuff. They even fixed a couple of niggles for the price of the service. Not sure they had many roadsters in - there was a lot of popping off for a look at the manual!

See above.

The only reason for looking at the manual during a simple service would be, the tea boy was doing it!

I was lead to believe that to change the spark plugs in a Smart Roadster meant pretty much dissembling the rear of the car as the plugs faced forwards...

Who on earth hangs about when the car is serviced? Collect and deliver from work for me all day long...

Be careful whose advice you buy, but, be patient with those who supply it. Advice is a form of nostalgia, dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it?s worth.

It's not that they face forward, the lower row (they're two plugs per cylinder) is obscured by the bodywork, so you have to take it off, which is no biggy, just a handful of bolts and screws.

Of course, if you're really 'smart', you drill 3x50mm holes in the back panel, which are then obscured by the number plate and mean no more bodywork removal to do a service.

I thought the same. Usually drop it off fri after work and pick it up sat afternoon when they done with it.
