I have a bike up for auction ATM, it has also been in my club magazine for three months. I want £3300 for it and a guy has just phoned offering me that. It is at £3100 on Ebay at the moment and will go up a few hundred quid or so.
Money is not a thing that motivates me a lot, The guy on the phone was genuine and wants it for his son to ride in trials and will pay me £3300 in cash and I will be happy with that.
How can I close an auction early?

You do nothing until the cash is in your hand.

I got my ped cheaply from a seller who hadn't twigged that.

The answer is simple you don't till you have the money in your hand, until then you put a note onto the page saying the bike is under offer.

Hopefully you have put it is advertised elsewhere Question

I would agree that you should not end it until it's definitely sold, but to do you so, you go to the selling items page, and click on "more options" or whatever it says, to the right of the item listing. Select "End item" - then - "Remove all bids" and select your reason for such (I always go for "item is no longer for sale" - and you're done.

It's worth noting, I don't think you can do this in the last 12 or 24 hours.

Alternatively, you can end the auction now by selling to the highest bidder. You just have to make sure he's the highest bidder AND you get to pay fees.

Looks like 2 people really want that bike!

I am torn on this, the guy I talked to on the phone tonight wants to drive down from Scotland on Sunday and fill my hands with 3.3K in paper. I may get more on Ebay but Ebay buyers are often tossers.

EBay charge a fee now if you end the auction early, although if it's the first time you've done it I think it gets wavered. Worth noting.

To be 'fair' to ebay bidders I often say I won't sell it elsewhere for less than the current bid.

So, if they've bid £10 now and want to bid £100 at the end, not my problem.

If they've bid £100 now and someone offers me £70, I'll get someone to bid it up to £70 and then get back to the person making the offer explaining that I've got a higher offer.

A bird in hand, without fees or hassle is definitely worth more I'd say, so I'd be tempted to bid it up to £3400 or something. You could even ask the interested buyer to do this and say if it hasn't gone up any more half an hour before he leaves, it's his for £3300 whatever.

Simply, if they turn up at my house before the auction ends with cash in hand, they can take it.

I just tell ebay, item no longer for sale as the item has become damaged, etc.

But now you get charged for doing that, they are clamping down on people ending auctions early.

he's one of the tossers then if he;s seen it on ebay.. tell him to bid £14000 [if he's genuine he will ] for it, then he will be highest bidder for sure, and just take the £3300 off when when/if he turns up .

thought money didn't motivate you so you should be happy with £3300

I think that is the best idea, get the fella to chuck a high bid in so he wins it anyway

That was the bike mate, the one with twin shocks. I never use it and it was in the way and the cash will go towards the new Jawa Sprinter.

It's the only bike I've sat on and instantly felt cooler than McQueen.

If that is your test of whether a person is genuine or not, you need a new test.

Ive done it. Bought a car off ebay while the auction still ran. To save hassle, i put a 2k bid on it. I gave about 400quid for the car. It enables feedback to be left, and offers some kind of protection ( i guess?) also, saves agro with the highest bidder and ending the auction.

Because a bid on eBay is supposed to form a binding contract. I am a genuine buyer when it comes to buying vehicles on eBay, having never messed anyone around, but if you asked me to bid £14,000 I would refuse. Therefore you need a new test.

Only bid what you are prepared to pay.

Would you be willing to pay the fees on a £14000 sale if your only getting £3300?

I know I wouldn't.
