Single cylinder Honda, plug hole needs rethreading, expensive?
Doubt any of my mates can do it, coz doesn't the hole need to be sleeved, or helio coiled, us tha the term?

Cheaper to get spares from a breaking bike?

Excuse spelling , brevity, fiddly smart phone.

If you have the head removed and can take it to a machine shop etc its not dear to have helicoiled.

As above drop in to a fab shop or machine shop, they'll coil it for a few quid

Thanks. Smile

Been quoted £15.00 if head is off. Or I can leave engine in bike and pay more.

Take the head off, give it to them to fix. Whilst it's off lap the valves and de-coke the head, give the bike a full service.

I've had an insert fitted into the spark plug hole of my old CB250RSA, personally I consider them a better deal than a helicoil which I've known to come out together with the plug in the past.

i recently had this issue, i dont like the coil inserts i had one fitted and it came out with the plug rather than staying in the actual cylinder head so i went with the idea of having a thread
fitted.
HOWEVER it never actually happened, first off i went to the local garage and was told they wouldnt do it THEN i went to an actual motorcycle repair shop, having known from previous experiences of their 'pricing and costs' i asked for a quote and got the expected 'ummm ... arrr ... be around 50 quid'
third and finally i left the head at another repair shop this time i left it there ... for a week... paid a tenner as the valves had been removed????? BUT STILL NO THREAD INSERT
now fed up i just went and got another cylinder head.
i had been told it was a cheap and fairly easy job but in my experience far from it.
good luck with yours

Dunno where you live but Head Technique in Donnington, Telford did a good job on my head.

Just squeeze some silicon sealant around a spark plug and wedge it in.

I take no responsibility if my advice is followed.

On sparkplugs.co.uk they do a kit for repairing sparkplug threads yourself.

The kit comes with several threaded collars and a tool which removes the old thread and cuts a new one. It is simply screwed into the plug hole with a socket and T bar.

You then put the collar on the new plug with some threadlock then screw them into the head.

I have a kit myself, and I have used it a couple of times on cars. The best bit is that you don't need to remove the cylinder head to do the repair.

All you do is fill the flutes on the tool with grease, and most of the swarf sticks to it. However I attached a small bit of hose to a vacuum cleaner and sucked the rest out of the cylinder.

Bottom of this page.

Old Thread Alert!

The last post was made 13 years, 75 days ago. Instead of replying here, would creating a new thread be more useful?
