500 mile car journey with 2 cats.

In about a month's time I am moving house. The journey is just under 500 miles and will take all day. I have had a look at various websites but none of them mention toilet stops. Has anyone done this sort of journey with a cat? How did you get on? Any helpful tips?

Also, has anyone used Feliway? Did it work?

Hi

We have used Feliway plug ins and they did seem to work with a rather neurotic cat.

As to toilet breaks, I would expect any cat in that situation to run away very quickly as soon it it gets lose without waiting to relieve itself first.

Hi

Suspect a harness and lead would freak them out more.

One of our cats would evacuate both ends of its digestive system on a 5 mile return trip to the vets. Make sure you can keep the car well ventilated.

Get a mild sedative from the vets.

Cats will not shit/piss while tethered.

Get a large-ish dog cage, plonk a blanket and a litter tray in there with water a food.

Make a mini cat shelter type thing.

Oh and be prepared for the most annoying journey in the world.

About cats and pee breaks they say that you should take a litter tray with you and when you stop for a break let the cats out of their carrier to chill out and do their business.

A neighbour used to have one of the expensive cat breeds that they would take out for a walk on a harness and lead, that thing would spend most of the time just flipping the hell out and trying to escape. I wouldn't bother with even trying that unless you have been taking yours out for walks that way before. Best keep them in the car.

I've done 200 miles with a Bengal and a moggie. The Bengal howled a lot, the moggie was fine. I don't think you'll ever get them to shit/piss to order (during a stop). We tried it with the Bengal, he just wandered around.

Not sure where you would plug them in on a car?

We bought a siamese from Somerset which was a 3 hour drive..mainly motorway. Wasnt pleasant as I was constantly worrying about the kitten. But once in the motorway she pretty much slept through most the journey. We had one stop half way which we put her on a litter tray but she didnt do owt. Basically we asked the seller to not feed or water her for a couple of hours before the trip..which helped.

Cats are quite tough creatures..they can put up with a lot. As its summer, just make sure you have the aircon on and buy a nice comfy carry case so it can rest easy on the trip....also drive steady and dont fling it round corners and do sudden stops.

We were worried sick..but it all went fine...and 6 months later the kitten is doing really well.

Best of luck.

PS..we use Felliways all the time when we go on holidays etc and they do work.

compassion at its best!!! Pets are more than just a material object. They are all unique and owners get close. Its a bit like saying if you're moving house just sell the missus and get a new one when you get into your new house.

We took Oreo Speedwagon to Newcastle and back from Berkshire in the car. She spent the first hour in her basket hating every minute. Then we let her out and she just sat on the back seat watching the world go by, happy as Larry.

We put a litter tray in the rear footwell so she could use it whenever she wanted to. She didn't use it once, either way.

The truth of this is debatable, but my feline employers find that their current staff members are tolerable, and they really would feel that having to train a new set of domestic staff was tedious in the extreme..

Whilst true to certain extents...it can all depend on the bread of cat. We have 2 Siamese and 1 normal moggie....the moggie can take or leave us. When we go away on holiday the neighbour comes round and looks after our cats...but the moggie just lools after herself..doesn't miss us etc......whereas the Siamese are really really close to us and are very loving and vocal. When we go away they sometimes get so stressed it makes them ill and when we get back they sure as hell let us know how much they missed us.

Our moggie just thinks...'meh'..wheres my wiskas!!!

Of the 4 cats we have had, 2 would be happy to change tin openers, 1 would freak that it might be losing out, and one very much clung on to me and treated anyone else as very much 2nd choice.

We used to bring them in to the disabled toilet at motorway service stations to let them stretch their legs while we changed the newspapers in the box
