I'm in the process of sorting this bike out for a friend and have a problem, it has no 3rd gear!

Do the gears come out easy, Will the problem be obvious to see, Is it an easy fix? Trying to keep the costs as down as poss as it only cost £300.

Thanks in advance

no drive in 3rd gear?

does the gear selection mech go up and down the gears ok, meaning 1st to 2nd, 2nd to 3rd, 3rd to fourth etc etc and also down the gears, 4th to 3rd etc etc etc

cg based, look for manual on here, also similar engine on cmsnl for the exploded views, which will give you an idea as to whats involved.....engine out and strip down I fear.

the gear selection mech is usually under the clutch basket

pics of both sides of bike may help

Just had a play. It changes up and down through the box no problem, it goes into third which feels solid but as soon as you put it under load it turns internally as if it's jumping/grinding the gear - does not sound nice.

If it's an engine out job I don't have the facilities here to do it, looks like a dealer job

Sounds like the dogs have rounded on that gear.

To explain simply, each gear has 3 or 4 little lumpy bits that are part of it and face outwards towards the selector hub, when the gear is engaged these lumpy bits fit into holes in the selector hub to transfer the torque through the gearbox, when these little lumpy bits wear they get sloping/chamfered sides and as a consequence when the power is applied the slopes force the lumpy bits out of the holes and so you lose drive.

Bottom line, engine out, split cases, inspect and locate faulty gear, strip gear shaft, replace gear with new, rebuild and refit engine.

Consider a decent used engine perhaps with the budget you mention?

Why not just skip the expense and hassle and flog it on for what he paid for it? You can put money into it but it'll still be the worst Lexmoto branded bike.

Thanks again Thumbs Up
