Hey, Just wondering how you guys and girls brake on your motorcycles.

I was talking to a friend and he was talking about something called engine braking?

he said to lay off the throttle , apply brakes , then declutch?
apparently the engine has the best braking power or something...

I thought that would wreak the engine? it's still applying power to the wheels while your braking?

I brake by declutching first , then rolling off the throttle , then hit the brakes - in a real quick motion...

Talking to my parents who drive cars , they apply there brakes before they declutch just like my friend

Wouldn't the car/bike stall if you just release the throttle?
I'm pretty sure my bike does.

Anyway , whats the proper way? I'm pretty sure I'm doing it wrong...

2 ways

1) front brake hard to lift the rear end. Roll along with rear end in the air until stopping point reached. Drop rear end back down. Nod to car full of chicks yu just stopped by.

2) Crank the rear brake on to lock the rear wheel. Place leg foot on floor and rotate bike 90 degrees around foot, still with locked rear wheel. Nod at various chicks getting wet for you.

Thumbs Up

I tend to try to minimise using my brakes by reading the road ahead which, in doing so, means I roll off the throttle to slow myself down (using engine braking) then brakes.

Declutching as you put it is also known as coasting when you're riding along and not in gear (the only reason I'm pointing that out is that you may have heard that term instead). So in my case, roll off the throttle > brakes > declutch > stop dead.

James

And make sure to stand on your pegs too! For err... front traction yes!

Here's what you do in three steps:

1. Roll off the throttle

2. Start squeezing the break (smoothly) + a bit of back break (unless it's raining then go about 50/50 with pressure)

3. As revs go down (and I mean close to stall, you'll feel it), pull the clutch in (change gears down if necessary) This will prevent the engine stalling.

I honestly cannot explain something like this any deeper.
Didn't they cover it on CBT?

Yep - I'm for real - no one tells you this.

What happens when people come from scooters to manuals? no one tells them how to brake when you have a clutch?

And I LOVE my bike.
Please tell me so I don't brake myself.... Embarassed

Your bike will not stall until it reaches a point where the force require to propel the bike is greater than the force being produced by the engine.

This usually occurs at very low speeds with very low RPM. Likewise more force is required to move a standstill motorbike than one that's in motion.

What you're doing is coasting. You clutch in and start coasting when you reach a point where you're slowing down and slowing down any more will stall the bike.

You dont pull the clutch in until the last second, to stop the engine stalling. Engine braking is powerful and should be used in conjunction with the wheel brakes. It won't wreck your engine and if your bike stalls when you release the throttle, you need to get that mended.

Who taught you how to ride? Confused

Here's good tip: Find a quiet road and PRACTICE!
If you stall, you'll know you didn't pull the clutch early enough.
If you stop (and the engine's running) then you did something right. Mr. Green

It's in the CBT and part of the theory test. It's also covered in numerous places regarding car driving (same technique) and in pretty much every YouTube video about motorcycle 101.

Yank the front brake on hard, then you won't have to worry about stalling Laughing

You wont wreck your bike. I'm pretty sure I read somewhere it may result in an increase in chain wear but that could be utter rubbish.

Engine brake away! Smile

You will need to get some proper oil before you can do it.

No it really isn't.
I've watched ~10 different youtube videos about braking on a motorcycle - not one of them talking about the clutch.
On my CBT I was told where the oil was and to look over your shoulder when changing lanes - that was it, nothing more.

Theory test - I don't have to take that yet.

And driving a car - I've only sat behind a wheel once when I was 7.

Nobody tells you , and I'm glad some of you guys took my question seriously. Thanks. Now I have to wait till sunday before I can practice.

Maybe you don't "have to", but you have to know the Highway Code in order to be safe and responsible out on the roads. Surely you were told during your CBT that it's your responsibility to know the HC - don't get complacent about it.

As for braking, you are actually right, if you did your CBT on a twist&go moped, then you obviously won't have learned anything about clutch control, when breaking or generally. So, either you get some lessons or you practice on your own, but yeah, the basics of stalling (and how not to) have been explained by others here very well.

As a side note, none of my bike instructors ever said anything about coasting. During my car lessons a few years ago, I remember how 'coasting' was a big no-no and anything above a few meters of it would carry the death penalty (=test failure).
In my bike lessons no one ever even mentioned coasting, and I do pull the clutch in generally rather early, and tend to coast quite a bit. It seems either they don't pick up on it or it really is ok to coast, much more so than in a car (and just to clarify, I don't believe coasting in a car is a bad thing either).

Look where you want to go and the bike (and your body position) will follow.

On MOD1 if you don't use engine braking you're likely to get a minor for not stopping soon enough - or have to do it again, panic and lock a wheel.
